8 ADHD Culprits Lurking in Your Home

Smoking

Smoking
Culprit: Nicotine exposure while pregnant
Found in: Cigarette smoke
What it does: A 2007 Swedish study showed that prenatal nicotine exposure increases the risk of ADD/ADHD in children who are genetically susceptible to the disease.
Fix it: Do not smoke while pregnant and avoid second-hand smoke exposure. Cigarette smoking increases the risk of a host of health problems for you and your baby including being born premature, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and respiratory infections. If you smoke, get help quitting. Keep your home smoke-free - do not let your spouse or guests smoke - and avoid exposure to second-hand smoke in bars, restaurants and other places.
