A Costly Habit

Smoking is the number one cause of preventable death in the United States. According to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), cigarette smoking is responsible for about 443,000 deaths in the U.S. each year, which equates to 1 in 5 total deaths. The U.S. economy also suffers, with an estimated $96 billion in health care expenditures and $97 billion in lost productivity during 2000 to 2004 because of health complications from smoking.
