Diagnosing Skin Cancer

A doctor can usually tell if a marking is skin cancer by taking your medical history and performing a careful visual examination of your skin. A biopsy will be performed on any suspicious areas of skin. This procedure involves removing a sample of skin for laboratory testing. If the doctor suspects the cancer has spread beyond the localized site, a biopsy will be performed on lymph nodes in the area for signs of cancer.
