Plenty of people make the mistake of chalking diabetes up to years of unhealthy living, but with 8.3 percent of the U.S. population living with diabetes, diet and weight are only part of the story. It's the nation's leading cause of heart disease and stroke as well as kidney failure, blindness and non-traumatic amputations. But of the nearly 26 million Americans living with diabetes, about 7 million don't know they have it.
