This medication is used to temporarily relieve ear pain due to ear infections (external otitis, otitis media). This product contains 3 ingredients. Benzocaine belongs to a class of drugs known as local anesthetics. It helps to numb ear pain. Antipyrine is a pain reliever. Phenylephrine narrows the blood vessels in the ear. This helps the pain medications work longer. This medication does not treat infections. Your doctor may direct you to use another medication (such as acetic acid, antibiotics) to treat the infection.
Temporary stinging/burning in the ear canal may occur. If this effect persists or worsens, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects. This medication may make it more difficult to tell if your infection is getting worse or if you develop a new infection. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these signs of a new infection occur: fever, new pain/redness/swelling of the ear, fluid leaking out of the ear. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the ear/face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing. This is not a complete list of possible side effects. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. In the US - Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088. In Canada - Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to Health Canada at 1-866-234-2345.
