Acne on face recently, proper care?

by winipero, May 23, 2007 12:00AM
Hi, I'm a 20 year old man and recently I have been having some problems with acne on my face (and occasionally my shoulder and chest). Sorry, this gets to be a little long, but I thought it might be useful to involve some details. Up until about half a year ago I had never had too many problems with acne, but over the past 2 to 2 and a half months my face has been breaking out quite a bit. For about the past two weeks my face has had some acne that doesent seem to have changed much at all (aside from getting slightly worse). I'm sure this can be assumed, but I have been changing the way I care for my face quite a bit recently. I am wondering if maybe the acne breakouts may actually be in response to the changes I've made. Can someone please help me in deciding a proper way to take care of my acne? Below this I will sort of summarize the changes I have made in taking care of my face.

About a year ago I washed my face about once a day and the only product I used was Neutrogena's Oil-free Acne Wash (containing Salicylic Acid 2%). This, however, started to cause my face to get real dry, so I switched to Clean & Clear Daily Pore Cleanser (not containing salicylic acid). Two months ago I noticed some acne that didnt seem to be going away, so i switched to Clean & Clear Blackhead Clearing Scrub (Salicylic acid, and rather large "micro-beads") and washing twice a day. More recently I have also started using 1 to 2 Neutrogena Treatment Pads (Salicylic Acid 2%) a day, along with my normal face washes. I'm not sure if it is a good idea to use so many products.... but I really want to get rid of my acne. I am a little worried that the microbeads might be little to rough on my face, and the salicylic acid may be causing my face to break out more in the long run. Is that possible?

It seems like it would probably be a good idea to go back to my old washing habbits (from a year ago), but the problem is i dont think that would take care of my acne any time soon. At the moment I am thinking about trying a product with Benzol Peroxide 2.5%. Would that be a good idea? Also, would using a moisturizer help at all? I do plan to see a dermitologist soon, but unfortunately I wont be able to with in the next few weeks. Uh, last question; is there any safe way to make my acne improve in the next week... with out making it worse in the long run? Thank you very much and sorry again for making this post so long.

I would definitely make the appointment to see a dermatologist if your acne has not improved thus far.  You may have adult acne that requires topical medication or oral antibiotics, and really you will see changes once you start those meds.  Also, a good facial might help improve you acne in the mean time - some spas do facials where they extract pimples and do a deep cleansing of the skin.  Or if you don't want to spend the money, try a good facial mask from a health store (something with kaolin clay - the body shop for skin and hair sells a blue corn mask that is wonderful!!!) after the shower - because your pores are open from the steam after the shower and it will help draw out blemishes.  Facial masks help a lot with the texture and appearance of your skin.
