Can anyone give advice on how to deal with someone who has sever acne?  She has very low self esteem and is very embarrassed about the acne. How do you help without making them feel worse emotionally?

I've actually had this same problem. I got involved with my friends diet, had her drink less sodas and talked to her about other health issues fast foods and soda could cause.

But still, acne can be caused by stress or hormones. I don't see how you could get your friend to use products like "proactive" without first admitting to her that she has an acne problem.

Proactive is a crock of ****. They have the nerve to show celebritys like P-Diddy n jessica simpson who who have had 1-2 pimples pop in those pictures talkin about how they were so overwhelmed by it etc.... Give me a break.
Id'e like to see diddy try n jessica try dealing with 76% of their back n upper chest fulla scars, black heads n deep embeded acne that has no exit n when it can finally barely be popped only thing that comes out is blood.
Proactive makes me sick to my stomach.

Best stuff i did was going away to my home islands in the Azores. I took 2 minocin capsules (100mgs) a day after meals n used Dalacin liquid bottle on those areas at night for about 2 months. June n July n then got off them to spend the rest of August at the beach out there getting plenty of salt water to help cleanse n rejuvinate my skin and some sun.

My skin was on its way back to perfection. This is after about 6-7 years of Horrendus acne like the kind described above. On my neck, back, n chest. Not much on my face.
But as i came back to the states n got away from the salt water again n sun and off the meds because i have no insurance n eating nasty foods again my skin is becomin a nightmare all over again.

Thus I Have no social life n the time i spent out there was the highlight of about 10 years....

Severe Acne is a mind killer
Proactive = Complete nonsense......

Sorry you feel that way about proactive. My sister had alot of problems w/ acne and now she looks better than ever. It may not work on some people though. One more thing, with that attitude its no wonder you have no social life.

Proactiv may not be for everyone but since I have started to use it. It was been great. So Im for proactiv.

Did you actually use the proactiv correctly? The cleanser toner and then lotion. I did once just use the cleanser didnt really have time for all three and the results. Well you actually need the three for it to do its job.

I have had pretty bad acne and I've tryed ALOT of different things that have failed. Recently I read about tea tree oil. I have been using that for about a weeek and a half now and it's working! I bought the oil in a health food store. It is 1oo% oil so you have to dilute it with a little water and after washing your face, rinse it with the oil. I do it morning and night.

Hi everybody

I once suffered terribly from acne, but I am very happy to relate that I have found a solution to my problem.

In the beginning, I used to squeeze at my pimples and put alcohol on them. The next day, however, my wounds had doubled in size. They were twice as bad and full of pus. It became so bad that I withdrew socially, and I only went out when I needed to. I felt really depressed.

I was at home a lot, and found myself turning to the internet for a solution. Now, I know about Accutane which also relieves acne. It is known, however, that after taking it for a while, a person can become stressed and feel down. So I felt that I needed to search further.

Eventually I came across deadseacosmetic.com which recommended a product called ‘Active Acne Mask’  (http://www.deadseacosmetic.com/medicalskincare.html

Proactiv works ... not for all, but for many. It would not hurt anything if you at least tried the product ...

Don't look down on her or pity her. That's the first and most important response. In most cases, it goes away after some time. What aggravates it or hastens the process of spreading is stress. The excessive sweating brought about by the anxiety of having acne, the dirt that comes in contact with the skin as you try to hide your face even more, and the experimenting with several chemicals all contribute to the worsening of acne. Console her. That's the best remedy for that.

I read about this cool new handheld device for acne and breakouts. I'm not sure though how much it costs and whether it really works. You might want to read the article - http://www.body-philosophy.net/thermaclear_acne_therative.

I used Proactive for 3 months, and at first it definitely seemed to help, but now, 3 months later, my skin is worse than ever.  I am 29 years old, and am damn tired of having acne.  My doc prescribed Retin-A, but my insurance won't cover it, and a tiny tube costs almost $90.  At this point, I am at my wits end.  I'm starting to think that I need to try something that works from the inside.  Not Accutane (i've heard nothing but horror stories) but something more natural, such as aloe vera juice.  Maybe I have a food allergy?
