I have been taking vicodin for about 8 months for various injurys sustained in a motorcylce accident.I have never exceeded 30 mgs(per day) and would say for the most part 15 to 22 mgs has been the course for the last 6 months. What can I expect in terms of withdrawel if any ? Also how do these drugs affect anxiety and depression as I have a problem with both ?

When are you going to anwser Jay's question I have the same one!

by Brian to John, Mar 26, 2000 12:00AM
Assuming you are taking somewhat the same amount as Jay, you can expect withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, hot/cold, insomnia, loose bowels, elevated pulse, depression.  They are worse the first 3-4 days (feels like a bad flu times 10).  Gradually improving for the next 7 days.  Post acute withdrawal symptoms of depression, insomnia, etc. can last up to a few months.  The best thing to do to reduce symptoms is to gradually taper off the meds.  See the postings above for how to do this and for some meds which help.  Finally, these drugs do help anxiety and depression in many people by "buffering" those feelings.  However, the price paid is too high, and the fake mental state created is not as good as people think.  Most people exist on the painkillers, but are not really LIVING.  So, real life is full of ups and downs, but on painkillers you get little of both.  Further, for those with anxiety and depression, the post acute withdrawal symptoms increase anxiety and depression, resulting in more cravings for the painkillers.  A lousy rollercoaster ride.

My husband recently went through 18 mos of contiuous kidney stones and has recently had surgery to remove his parathyroid but has been on vicodan all this time, sometimes taking up to 15 650 mg pills per day and his personality has changed,i feel he is addicted , he cant seem to be without them almost afraid to have any pain. what can i do......

He is certainly addicted.  He is not taking 650mg of hydrocodone in the pills, that is the amount of aceteminophen (which by the way is a very high amount that could cause liver damage).  He may need a program to help detox him.  Look in the yellow pages for either drug rehab programs or an addiction doctor to help him.

I have been taking 5 mg of methadone for Lupus and Rheumatoid arthritis. My doctor wants me to go to a Rheumatologist and so he has given me Vicodan 5mg every 6 hours. For 2 days I was OK but then started severe withdrawal. All of the horribleness of withdrawal. I am trying to work but can't. I need to make 4 more days until I see my new doctor what can I do to stop the withdrawal.  6 tablets does not even stop it.

My father has been on Vicodin for years.  He recently had an episode where he thought he had a stoke.  He was hospitalized and as he is a doctor, after finding nothing, he discharged himself.  His speech is slurred and he claims he is getting better slowly.  His doctor did a housecall the other day and I went to see his doctor today and his doctor thinks it is Halcion and Dad said his doctor is wrong and that he is suffering from vicodin.  Does vicodin kill areas of one's brain responsible for speech?  If he tapers off will his speech return?  He complains of a stomach ache which is the vicodin I think, and also of a terrible headache for which his doctor thought he had a brain tumor.  All of his liver tests were normal-well, exceptional.  He is a brilliant, pioneer heart surgeon heading toward his 90's, recently won an award for being the first man to operate on a beating heart replete with a standing ovation.  His father lived past 100 as did his grandfather.  Dad has no signs of any disease except for fibromyalgia which started this whole awful vicodin cycle.  He has been off and on it for 20 years.  He takes 6 600ml tabs or less a day.  He has no appetite so I cook fabulous meals and make him eat.  How does he get out of this hell?  Please help.  Thank you.  Miran
