Drug Use and the Recurrence of Gynecomastia Following Corrective Surgery

Can the use of drugs known to cause or contribute to gynecomastia (alcohol, anti-depressants, marijuana, steroids, Tagamet) effectuate a recurrence of the condition even after liposuction and the surgical removal of the glands under the nipple?

It is very rare for a recurrence of gynecomastia after male breast reduction procedure. However, since you are aware these drugs can cause gynecomastia it would be best to avoid or limit the use of such drugs.

Is it true that chronic pot smoking causes breast development in men? I understand that, when you smoke pot, you get an initial increase in testosterone, followed by a steady decrease to a below-normal level. How about opiates? Are there any identifiable physical changes from chronic opiate use?

I have read several different sources that claim chronic use of marijuana does cause gynecomastia. They allege that the effects of THC closely resemble those of estrogen in the body. I have not run across any related information dealing with opiates. I'd be interested in any information substantiating or refuting the above.

Yes, frequent marijuana use is linked to gynecomastia. I don't know the percentage of cases linked to marijuana use but in terms of the total number of marijuana users the incidence of this disorder is quite small. Use of methadone has also been linked to gynecomastia. I don't know of any other opiates which cause male breast growth.

I had gynecomastia surgery conducted twice at the UPENN Hospital and they STILL grew back. 2 surgeries and I still got them :(
