HELP!!!!!! Ultram and Bruises???

by Sandy, Oct 28, 2000 12:00AM
I have been taking Ultram for over a year now and inbetween refills I have had Darvocet and Vicodin.  Recently I have been starting my day with 2 Vicodin and taking 4 Ultram throughout the day.  Basically I would take meds 3 times a day for a herniated disk in my back.  I am out of Vicodin and just using straight Ultram ( I was given vicodin to help with the pain after the cervical epidural)  Anyhow, I take about 6 Ultram a day and I noticed last week that on my arm there is a deep purple bruise, one that has not gone away yet.  I don't know where the bruise came from and I don't recall ever pinching the area to make such a bruise.  Has anyone ever just had bruises appear while on Ultram?  It doesn't seem to be fading in color and just wondering why?  My friend made a joke and said that I am not able to heal like a person who is not on drugs can.  Is she right?  Is that all it is, or is it something more serious?  If she is right that would explain why it won't go away, but that doesn'texplain why it is there is the first place!

Also I have been noticing on my third dose in the evenings I get really clammy and break out in sweats then get aggrivated where I have to walk around (I can't sit still).  My hearts feels like it is going to break out of my chest at these times.  I try to sit and wait it out.  It usually lasts for 30-45 minutes.  Any thoughts?

Thanks

Sandy, sounds like withdrawals to me kiddo.  I was or have been hooked on  Vicoden for 6 mos to a year.  Getting them legally and from a friend, not so legally.  A few times, I tried Ultram in between access, but got no relief from it.  I am not sure of withdrawals from Ultram itself, but your symptoms are what I have suffered for the past week.  I have been clean for a week now, and have been horribly sick.  I told everyone my secret, I had to...I could not go on that way.  I was in a fog that only I could not see.  Everyone intervened (close friends and family) and helped me thru the worst of the shitty days.  Sandy, call a detox center.  They will answer your questions over the phone without you giving your name.  Taper your meds as follows:  1/2 the quantity every time you usually take your meds on the first day.  You will feel horrible.  Vomiting, shaking horribly, fever, cramping, diarrhea, just basically like the Stomach Flu and a really bad case of it.  If you have a med like Xanax or Ativan take 1 at the same time you take the half of your usual dosage of meds.   They should help calm you.  You will loose sleep for days, but each day you will become stronger.  Don't be alone during this time.  By the way...I also have unexplained bruises all over my body.  I even became almost jaudiced.  Please seek help.  4 really shitty days is the gist of the withdrawals.  Hang in there and take a multivitamin.  Neena

I also bruised easy from Ultram. And by the way, regardless of what doctors tell you, Ultram is more addicting the vicodin. I know of someone that went basically bananas when they stopped taking Ultram.

I would throw that stuff out now and get back on vicodin.

I'm on my anti-Tylenol kick again here. I'm not sure what Ultram does to the body but I can tell you that Tylenol is pure poison to your liver. It's in Vicodin, Lortab and generic hydrocodone pain killers.  I'm currently taking Lorcet and have noticed bruises on my abdomen.  I also have chronic liver disease but my doctor tells me that I'm on a safe dose for my liver. I don't think so! Check to see if your ankles are swelling, too. It's a dead giveaway of taking too much Tylenol. Dana was saying she thought she was jaundiced?  That indicates liver problems, also.

Maybe both of you should have a liver function blood test done to be sure.

I currently am only taking Advil for pain but I know I need stronger medication because I am suffering on a daily basis. Problem is that all doctors think I am a drug seeker so I just stopped going to doctors over a year ago. They have proved to me to be selfish, only worried about the DEA getting on them....not about helping patients in pain that takes away the quality of life in 30 something year old patients with more life to live but when you cant walk or bend or wipe your rear end.....well......they still dont care. What ever happened to the good old fashioned doctor that cares about each and every patient....knows you by name if you see them in the Mall and remembers your kids names? They are gone now. Only in it for the money and that is that!! These doctors get off easy and honestly its easy to be a doctor now days.......if you dont know whats wrong.......send them to someone else but collect the money no doubt!!

If you have liver disease then no amounts of tylenol can possibly be good for you but you must need pain relief or I am sure the doctor wouldnt keep you on Lortabs or lorcet......whatever you said you were on. Pardon the spelling!

I am not jaundiced by the way. I dont know who said that. I think it was another post.

good luck anyhow.......

Yeah, I was wrong about jaundice thing, it must have been someone else.

I know what you mean about insensitive doctors. Now that I have no medical insurance, I can't afford my old doctor anymore. So I go to a free clinic and it's tough to get anything at all.

I just started keeping a pain diary to document everything. They say it really helps a doctor see your pain and how it effects the quality of your life. I have problems, like you say you have, and it is exhausting me just doing simple little everyday things that most people take for granted. I got the pain diary information and forms from the MGH Chronic Pain Forum. I've gotten a lot of support and informaion from the people there. Anyways, it's better than some doctor assuming that you just have arthritis and telling you to just deal with it.

I wish you all the best! J.B.
