The affects of not drinking

by brian, Feb 07, 2001 12:00AM
A month ago I was arrested for DUI and decided to quit drinking completely, after drinking regularly and heavily for twelve years. It's not near as hard as I thought and the emjoyment that I get from having quality time with my family gives good reason to continue. My problem is at night when I to sleep. I can only get to sleep four nights out of the week and only for a few hours a night.I don't even feel tired. like I've recieved a new supply of never ending energy. I would like to know if my body is just getting adjusted to my new lifestyle or if I might have another problem that has been masked by the drinking for all those years.

                               Thankyou

Try and take a hot bath, lay off the caffiene, take some tylenol P.M. or Excedrin Nightime, but don't abuse it. Don't try so hard to get to sleep either.  When your body is tired, you'll know.  I personally think you've been blessed with not needing much sleep.  I HAVE TO HAVE at LEAST 7 hours or I am in a world of ****.  Just enjoy your recovery and try and stay sober.  I was an alcoholic myself, I know exactly what you are talking about.  It will go away with time.  It took me nearly 2 years before I had regular sleep patterns. Now I ready for bed at 10:00 and just can't stay up to watch Code Blue on TLC any longer LOL : ) Damn it!! Take Care and best of luck to you.

I'd say that it is a combination of a new lifestyle and newfound energy right now.  It takes a good 90 days for your body to normalize from the daily insults of alcohol abuse.  When I stopped alcohol, I drank a lot of coffee and iced tea with extra sugar.  That definately kept me up till midnight most of the time!  Alcohol is a sedative, anesthetic, depressant substance.  When we quit using it our minds can go haywire for a while.  I think you are going through some normal changes right now and I wouldn't lose any sleep over it just yet.  J.B.

Hi everyone, sorry to bust in like this. I have a question that I know someone out there has the answer to. I have been addicted to Hydrocodone and Methadone for about two years. I have never tried anything else. Recently, I "found" a 40 mg Oxycontin pill and am wondering if it is safe to take it and what I should expect from it. The reason I'm asking is because the first time I took a 10 mg Methadone, I thought I was going to die, it felt like really strong Hydrocodone. I'm kinda small-framed (5'8" , 110 lbs.). I read in the PDR that your not supposed to break or chew it because it would let out more than normal. Maybe I'm being paranoid, I just don't want to OD. Any info would be appreciated.

P.S. I know this is an addiction forum and we're supposed to help each other get off of this stuff. I don't mean to encourage drug abuse. Sorry!

Well, I don't know how much Vicodin you're taking...If you take less than 5 or so a day - the Oxycontin will probably have a kick to it. If you're up to 10-15 a day, the Oxy will not be that big of a deal. Remember, if you just swallow the pill whole, it is time release, meaning you'll get roughly 5 mg. of Oxycodone an hour or so. Not that big of a deal to an addict. I am/was up to 15 or so Lortab 10/500 a day and I chewed a 40 and a 20 Oxycontin up. Nothing mind numbing. You get high, but it's not like someone just shot you up with Demerol or anything. It's a very lazy high, as opposed to Hydrocodone that makes me personally a little wound up. It's good that you are being careful. To be sure, I should tell you not to take it at all, but we both know you're going to. From one addict to another - swallowing it whole isn't going to do much, unless you take something else with it. I may have a weird tolerance, but I don't think It's going to do much to you...but again, if you're only taking 1-4 Vicodin a day, it'll probably be pretty heavy. Best advice - don't screw around and definitely don't add yet another drug to your list. But second to that, just be careful. I'm 5'8 145lbs by the way. All in all, I prefer Hydrocodone to Oxycontin...not that I'd turn it down. Again, it all depends on what your tolerance is right now. Good luck, be careful.

What the heck are you into anyway?  You are addicted to hydro and methadone and suddenly found Oxy?  It's just not that simple of a progression in my way of thinking.  Be honest and tell the whole truth here if you really want some help. You sound so naive at this point of view. Do not chew an OXY, please.  J.B.

what is the dif between hydrocodone & oxy contin

Thanks

by cindi, Feb 10, 2001 12:00AM
Hydrocodone is the active ingredient found in Vicodin, Lorcet/lortabs, tussionex, vicodin tuss etc.  oxycontin is a time release percocet.  The main ingredient in percocet is OXY codone as opposed to HYDRO codone     hope this helps

this is obviously not the physician Brian known to many of us on the forum. My first advice is, if you don't have legitmate pain issues, you shouldn't be using the oxy at all. There couldn't be a more addictive drug than oxycodone. Sounds like you're connected with "the drug scene" to have such a causually eclectic menu of drugs at your disposal. Use it at your own peril and live with the consequenes.

This is my first time writing in here. It is Feb. 13th. I have just read your comments. Please DO NOT do the Oxycontin. I am from Maine, people have become so addicted that they are breaking into drugstores to get the stuff. I am an alcoholic, but the equation to oxycontin is heroin. Don't do it!
