I had asked the same question of Dr. Steve last February, it seems he has flip-flopped on his reply since then. This is what he had to say 5 months ago.

Check out this conclusion from a published study in a reputable medical journal:
CONCLUSION: Newborns exposed to a high level of cocaine in utero (RIAH: >81 ng/10 mg hair) exhibit asymmetric intrauterine growth retardation in which the head circumference is disproportionately smaller than would be predicted from the birth weight (head wasting). The deficit in head size associated with cocaine exposure may reflect the effects of a specific central nervous system insult that interferes with prenatal brain growth.
Need I say more? Pregnant women who get wasted are "wasting" the brains of their babies!

My ex-boyfriend got a woman pregnant while they were on a 7 month excessive crack binge. The baby was born in March, he had no physical abnormalities, however he cries constantly and can not be consoled. His mother had to quit her job and go on public assistance because the day-care provider would not/could not care for a crack baby. I am not a drug user and I have no children so I can't possibly understand how a women could poison her own child. To me children are something to be cherished and protected like a mother lion protects her cubs. Maybe my views are a bit excessive but to me the child would be much better off being taken away from such an environment and given a chance at life. I'm no expert by any means, but I think with lots of love, guidance, and stability these babies have a chance. I guess only time will tell. Kate
