Where do you live and who is delivering your healthcare?

Can you tell us a little more of your drug use history?

I hope someone can give me the TRUE facts about detoxing off of methadone. I have been attending a clinic for the past 7 months and reached my blocking dosage at 75mgs. For the past three weeks I have gone down by 10 mgs. I have heard all the horror stories of how horrible the withdrawl can be and how long it takes to go through. I have been told the longer you stay on it the harder it is to get off. It has worked very well for me now. I was taking between 30 to 40 pain pills a day. Any kind would do, I was not picky. I decided to go this route after reading an article in the paper but maybe I should have gotten more facts. I'm scared to come off of it but I'm scared to stay on any longer. I have detoxed only once (at home from the pills) and it was pure hell for two weeks (physically) and then came the depression afterwards. That clean time lasted all of three months. My question is if I detox slowly what should I expect when I take my last dose? I know that when you get around 20mgs you can start to experience some discomfort, so you go down by 2 or 3 mgs instead of 5mgs. Will I be in the same shape I was last detox or will there be minor discomfort since I did it slowly? Will I have the runs and sleepless nights with the restless legs? Has anybody experienced going off of meth slowly and successfully? How long do the withdrawl symptoms last? I'm really scared at this point, I really screwed up my life with the pills--lost a professional job due to stealing meds-got arrested and went through pre-trial intervention and am awaiting an expungement so my record will be wiped clean. I was called back to a second interview for a job I really want. I am playing beat-the-clock with the expungement coming through before the backround check. Thank God I have the love and support of my family to have gotten me through this horrible ordeal. I haven't been able to work for a year because of this and am financially in debt. I just need some real honest answers--PLEASE!!! Thanks!!!

It is possible, i give you hope.

My husband just got out of a 28-day program after using oxys and methadone.  His methadone dose was approx. 50 mgs and had been for over 1 year.  He also abused large doses of oxycontin (interveniously).

An excellent rehab had him off of everything in 5-days, i kid you not!!!

They used phenobarbitol, klonipin, a mild muscle relaxer for the leg cramps, and a mild seditive for the sleeplessness.

His trick he says was to keep moving.  Jog every morning, work the toxins out of you by moving and moving, even if you feel like you are going to die.  He was feeling great, except for body aches, until he came home.  The homefront and being out of the 'protective environment' of rehab is what got him...

He claims a lot of it is in your mind... but i won't lie to you, your body will ache for some time to come.  Even if you didn't have pain prior to using pain pills, you will experience pain afterwards until your body adjusts, but it's bearable if you want it bad enough.

They decreased his dose each day and in 5-days he was finished!

I'm sad to say he's relasped, and is having a very difficult time mentally.  Like i said, the physical part is bearable, but he mental part, no matter what kind of opiate you are hooked on, is very very difficult.  Meetings, counseling, a good sponser are all MUSTS!!!!  Find anything and everything to keep your mind off of the drugs, and push yourself to 'do things' even if you just want to crawl up in a ball!

Good luck, i just wanted to share a success story (sort of), of how much easier it is to beat methadone than you might think.

Of course, consult a dr, methadone is nothing to mess around with on your own (detoxing).  Blood pressure and other things have to be monitored.  It's a very powerful drug, and at those levels, you have to make sure your body is physically up to the challenge!!

Good luck and prayers!

I have been on MMT for almost 3 years now. I have started detoxing and am down to 20 mgs. Today I am going down to 10 I hope. I have got down to 5 mgs and stayed there for over a week. I had some symptoms, but not as bad as when I would run out of pain pills and go through withdrawl. Someone explained to me on here how the methadone actually lets your body kinda get back on track. I hope whoever it was will chime in again. Anyway I am back to detoxing again. It has been different this time. There are 2 reasons why. One is I started taking the vitamin supplements that Thomas and pillpoppa recommended and two I have decided I don't want to teach anymore and am in college changing my career. I have to get my rear up every morning and I keep my mind engaged all day. Like Jenny said stay busy. I am also on an antidepressant Zoloft. I was on it before the drug abuse. That was the main reason I could not stop taking drugs without the methadone was the depression. It has helped me so much. The antidepressant I am on is not addciting and you can't get high off of it either. If you decide to talk to your doctor about taking one please remember to tell him if you decide to take the vitamins to make sure it is ok to mix them. Mine said it was alright, but you need to check yourself. Please let us know how you are doing.

hey: hang in there!! What I know about methadone detox is this: the

last 5 mgs. will be the hardest. stay focussed with what you are

trying to do! keep telling yourself this is what i want to do and

i will walk thru anything to get there! Methadone is just plain

bad news. Gianna, nothing new ever happens in the world og drugs.

the newness comes after you get clean of them. There is a whole

forum of people pullin and praying for you.

keep an angel on your shoulder

Thank you both for answering my questions. I plan on taking it slow. I will detox slowly and decrease the amount if necessary to 2 to 3 mgs a week. I feel so good and NORMAL right now that part of me would like to stay on it for good. After my morning ride of 1 1/2 hrs daily I do have the rest of the day in complete freedom--I don't even think about using and obtaining pills. The downside is the driving time and not being able to travel unless the clinic hooks you up to a visiting clinic in the area you plan to visit. I have been following everyone here and I just want to tell you Jennyfla something my counselor said to me. (Re: your husbands relapse). When I started this meth program I used to take pills in the beginning to try and still get the high feeling. My counselor told me that when I relapse I had to stop looking at it like I was a bad girl. He said you are an addict and that's what addicts do. You must pick yourself up and brush off and keep on fighting to stay clean. If your husband falls tell him he is not a bad person and he didn't undo all of his rehab progress. Many times we use this as an excuse to keep using, since we already messed up. Just go to your next AA or NA meeting and talk about what happened so you can get the support you need to keep striving. Don't beat yourself up. How is Jennyfla doing? (since we already covered your husband) Still struggling? Have you considered rehab for yourself? I know all the reasons why you can't go (kids, your husband not strong enough, family doesn't know etc..)but how can you NOT go?  You are such a caring soul, you deserve to get the help you need.  Thanks again for your response.

You are such a sweetie, i really hope this works for you, and i have a good feeling that it will, you seem to have the right attitude, and the proper help!  :)

Good point about my hubby, and that's just what they told him about brushing yourself off, doesn't mean you failed, these things happen, you just need to go through your steps again, i'm told, he knows what he needs to do!!!

Me, i'm OK!!!!  I really am.  I quit alcohol clearing my mind some, now working on the opiates.  I'm down quite a bit, just take enough to keep the creepys away, but i know i need to stop permanently.

I can do this with help from my friends (here) - support, and through meetings.  I will look into outpatient treatment possibly, been there before, but absoluately no inpatient for me!!!

I also have support through my husband's treatment facility; Hazeldon, what a great bunch they are!!!! :)

Good luck to you sweetie, my prayers are with you!
