Am I allergic to alcohol?

by Sully, Oct 28, 2001 12:00AM
I think I may be allergic to alcohol, although the only symptom I have is burning in my stomache, and nausea after only a sip of any kind of alcohol.  I think I may be allergic to it, but just have a mild case.  Is this possible?

What happens if you have more than one sip?  Or have you only had one sip?  How big is the sip? Strong alchoholic beverages do cause a burning sensation going down and in your stomach. Haven't you ever seen someone throw back a shot on TV and make a face? I don't know about the nauseau.  Only time I ever got or get nauseous is when I drink way too much.  There are lots of informed people on here, some in the medical field, who would probably more knowledgeable about allergic symptoms.

hm  that is a really broad question,,,there are people out there that are allergice to alcohol  the sulfites etc. in beer and wine etc..some people have complained about hive, nasal congestion, and typical allergy symptoms after consuming alcohol and in very extreme cases anyphyaxis (throat swelling etc) sypmtoms have occured after drinking beer and or wine again, probably due to the sulfites which are found in wine, coolers etc..let me ask you this...do you drink often?  Do you take medication,,do you have a problem with your stomach such as ulcers, a history of ulcers, GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) where you have to take meds like Prilosec, Nexium, zantac etc.?  i suppose anything is possible...like Kstuebin said above strong drinks do cause a burning sensation..maybe your doc could better answer your question..next time you go in ask him...have you noticed if this occurs when you drink on an empty stomach or a full stomach?  I hope we have helped you a bit.....take care    cin

How old are you anyway?  In my opinion, there are two basic allergies with alcohol.  One causes you to get ill enough not to ever experiment with it again.  The other one causes you to lose control and drink excessively to the point of insanity.  I have the second of the two, but it took many drinks and a few brushes with the law to realize it.  By the time you come to believe you have a problem, a lot of wreckage has occurred in your life. You can't begin to imagine how bad it gets unless you've been there!

Then there are the normal people who have no allergy and can take it or leave it.  You have to decide where you want to be  with alcohol.  J.B.

I ws thinking about you a lot today.  You are going in tomorrow right?  Is there any way you can let us know how things are going?  I will be praying for you.  Here is a big hug((((HUG)))) Julie

I'm 19.  The sip is usually very small, because the taste of all alcohol makes me sick.  I dont touch strong alcohol because after one shot I am throwing up the whole night.  The only things I will try to drink are light, like Midouri Sours, or wine coolers.  These make me sick far sooner than I feel any affect at all.

I know I dont have a problem with alcohol, I am just wondering if I could be allergic to it, becuase the amount I consume really shouldn't make me as nauseous as it does.

Sully I am sorry I keep hijacking your thread (I really hate that term)  I wish I had an answer for you.  I have heard of people having allergic reactions to small amounts of alcohol.

Ginger - If you are reading this could you please let me know you are ok.

Cindi - How are you feeling?  I am now suffering a horrible bladder infection.  Did you go to the Dr. after yours and what did they give you?  C ya

Gee "Doctor" Steve...thank you sooooo much for deleting my thread on how I got CLEAN from hydrocodone...golly, nobody here has that problem, so I can certain SEE why you did that.

To all of the WONDERFUL people who replied to me and gave words directly from their hearts- thank you SO much. I feel you all have validated my life.

To: Beth...I'm mad too!
Not only did he delete your post...look at the answer he gave Danielcc on his 10-13 post. He said that if the tone of this forum doesn't change...he may shut it down.I guess we all better start finding a new place to hang out....and discuss it thru email so daniellcc doesn't find out about it. I'm so damn mad at both danielcc and "doctor" steve. If we aren't allowed to laugh at ourselves and talk about what brought us to this forum in the first place (love of opiates) then what are we allowed to talk about? Are we supposed to talk in circles and not make any sense like danielcc does? Arrrrrrrrrgh! If this forum gets shut down..thanks to danielcc....he'll have to find a new place to act like a crazed donkey. My bet is he's already been kicked out of other forums.

I didn't see your post on possibly shutting down this forum but, i would like to say that if you are even considering it, that would be a very horrible mistake.

People have made the statement that this forum has even gone as far as to "save their lives".  This forum is all some people have, and to shut it down would be a terrible shame.

There are going to be people that post on any board that act as if they know everything, and talk down to others.  It is human nature to defend oneself, and an entire board shouldn't just be 'shut down' because a defending stance was made.

Look at all the positiveness of this board, and you can't tell me that this board is not worth 'keeping alive' for as long as there are people who need others to talk to, cry to, listen to and share their deepest throughts with.  We are all special gifts, and when someone comes along and hurts someone we all care about, we are going to stand up and defend that person. I'm sure you would hope for the same if you were in that position.

This board will remain alive in our hearts for as long as we all live!

Love you all!!!

Jenny

To: Dr Steve is closing down the forum?
Fine. Let him. I'm sorry the "tone" bothers him so much. I am a web programmer by trade and I will make us a new forum first thing tomorrow. The loving, caring, nurturing, helpful "tone" found here will be MORE than welcome on my forum.

I'd like to post my email address.  It's ***@****. Please get in contact with me if this is shut down.  Or email if you want to talk to me anytime. I would only point out to Dr. Steve that while the tone of our responses to Danielcc were rude, they were also unamimous. I think he should take into account the fact that Danielcc is well aware of how we are going to react to him and seems to enjoy pushing buttons.  I still say we should completely ignore him in the future with blank posts as I've seen done on other message boards to people everyone disagrees with.  And, Dr. Steve, the people on this board have helped me so much.  Last night was the first night I went to bed clean.  That would not have been possible without all the help and support I received here.  Dr. Steve, isn't that worth something? It certainly is to me.

Sully, it seems pretty simple to me: just don't drink.  I understand that all your friends probably drink and you're stuck sitting there and not joining in but it obviously isn't good for you for whatever reason.  If you want something to tell them, then by all means, just tell them you're allergic to alcohol.  When I was in high school, I knew a girl who was allergic and would break out in hives so there can be an alllergic reation to it. My father was an alcoholic and I was always afraid of drinking because I saw what it could do. So I would sit there at drinking parties and take tiny little sips and pretend I was drinking so I would be part of the group thing.  So I do understand why you want to be able to drink but it doesn't sound like a very good idea.

If anyone would like to email me your email address I will post it for the other members.  My email address is ***@****. The email addresses will be posted at http://www.mdo.net/users/kstuebin/aemail.html   This way we can all stay in touch with one another if this board is taken down before Beth gets a new one in place.
