Medications for depression/methamphedamine dependency

by 35andHigh, Dec 05, 2001 12:00AM
I am 35 yrs old and cannot seem to shake my smoking meth addiction.  Where it sends most people sky high.  It seems to almost level me out.  I have been in controlling emotionally abusive relationships since I was about 15.  I was thought to be perfect by everyone and excelled in everything, but I was terribly insecure inside.  I didnt start using until age 20.  I have always been sporatic with my use 2 yrs on 3 yrs off etc.. The past year and 1/2 I lost everything in a divorce.  Since then my addiction has remained constant.  Which medication would be the most helpful in my situation and help me combat this addiction?

This forum should really be helpful for you, it takes a lot of courage to log on an spell it all out.  I don't use meth but I am addicted to narcotics so I understand not being able to stop. I am not a doctor but you might want to get a good physical and see of your metabolism is working correctly.  you made me think of people who are ADHD (attention deficient disorder) who tend to feel calm on speed.  Not saying that is you but it might be a good idea to get checked out.  Some people get much benfit from anti-depressents but again a Doctor would know how to determine that for you.  I am trying to come to terms with my addiction and really do something about it, I have learned that is the first step in change.  What ever you do or don't do you will find a lot of support on this forum, people who will not judge you and will share their own experience and struggles.  Best of luck, Telby

I have been a clean recovering meth addict for 9 years. I smoked meth daily for over 5 years. After my detox I lived in a half way house for a year. When I approached a year clean I thought I was going crazy so I went to a state funded mental health facility and met with a really good Doctor who understood Meth addiction. He prescribed a drug called Wellbutrin. It was new but was supposed to help with addiction. This is the same drug that is now given to people to quit smoking (Zyban) it goes by the generic name Butrophin.

I have been on this med for 9 years and have been clean and have gotten my life back. My girlfriend is a chemist and explained to me that the compound that makes up Wellbutin is very similar to the compound that is meth. All I am sure of is that this drug helped me in my road to recovery. I still attend meetings every week and live the life set forth by the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous which is necessary for my recovery.

Hi Everyone..i am new to this forum.  I was put on Dexedrine (speed) 2 years ago after a doctor said i had ADHD.   He put me on 40mg 4 times a day...within a month i was on paranoia trips and having illusions.  Yes, Speed put me out like a zombie when it accumulated in me...but the rebound withdrawal sent me balistic and violent!!  I ended up in rehab and am now clean.  I just wanted to comment on the Wellbutrin.  I am on it now...and glad to hear that it helped with addiction for someone else.   I noticed that by myself and glad someone confirmed it for me.
