allergic to alcahol

by ptm7, Aug 25, 2002 12:00AM
I am half asian. I may have that missing enzyme everyone is talking about regarding alcohol being processed in the liver. If this is the case, is there anything I can do. Is there anything I can take to build up this enzyme in my body?

Is it possible to build up a resistance to alcohol?

Or do I need to avoid alcohol completely?

please let me know

It is true that some people are allergic to alcohol and that they never have a good experience when they drink.  I have known people that broke out into rashes and others who have gotten nauseous with even a tiny amount of alcohol.  What happens when you drink?  If it doesn't agree with you, why would you want to drink?  I don't really drink (other than an occasional glass of wine with dinner) because I don't like what it does to me--because of this, I have no desire to "go out drinking."  If you were allergic to peanut butter and had a bad reaction, would you eat this?

I have a funny story about someone who said they were allergic to alcohol (not to make light of your sitch, P), and he was at an AA meeting and he said, "Hi, my name is ______ and I am allergic to alcohol.  When I have a drink, I break out into an *******."

He was pretty funny--he made me laugh.

I too believe I am allergic to booze, any kind and it has not always been the case since I did most of my drinking before I was 21( now 38) I get sweaty and feel like I am on fire inside, it feels like my insides and stomach are burning, even with just a few sips of beer, so being an addict who would rather have pills I don't drink any longer I mean whats the point? I remember when I first got clean the 1st time I was dying the cravings were so bad that I drank a whole bottle of wine and then fell asleep I soo wanted that same buzz thats vikes gave me but no such luck so I no longer drink any alcohol and I am not missing anything- Best of luck, Badd
