Beyond MD's knowledge

by skepticmaniac, Apr 24, 2003 12:00AM
Someone close to me has been on many different types of meds over many years. From oxycontin, to vicodin, to....you name it and it has been perscribed to her. In doses that would sedate an elephant (in my opinion). She currently takes the latest med for nausua along with methadone, premerin (excuse my spelling) and neurotin. She constantly has extreme belly aches and throws up 4 or 5 times a day. Though she is getting some nutrition, her weight is okay, she is in agony. Trips to the hospital and the tests they have done reveal nothing wrong with her physically or within their scope of understanding. I just broght her home from our local hospital where they wanted me to commit her to their phsyc department which I did not do. Someone somewhere must know of or have some opinion on what could be causing her to loose her stomach. She wrechs often even when there is nothing in her stomach to loose. Does someone have any idea. It may have nothing to do with her use of perscription medicine. It may be the most accute case of gastro or acid reflux, but it's something. Your attention to this matter and any help you could provide will be greatly appreciated.  Thank You.

I dont know what all you taking right now.  How much do you have acces to?  I am going from 12-14 a day habit with some days as high as 20.  Hydro that is.

I started with 8,7,6,5 for three days each, then 4&3 for 4 days each, then 1&2 for a week each.  Someone said that that sounded good.  I have some clonidine and xanax from the last time.  Believe it or not I got the clonidine after I went thru all the rough stuff.  I went to the Doc and told him I didn't like taking all this stuff and he gave me Rx for it.  But I was at 3 weeks by then! LOL

What were you taking them for before?

I have been on pain meds for chronic pain for 12 yrs. I have a chronic ulcer also. I know that my Dr. watches my condition, and believe me, it gets bad. I throw up to the point of know return. My Dr. switches me ,during these times, to a pain patch.(duragrsic patch)and takes me off of oral meds.(I take methadone for pain,30mgs)I also take other meds besides pain meds. Any time we put pills through our GI TRACT, WE ARE IRRITATING THE LINING. ESPECIALLY pain meds.IT SOUNDS LIKE YOUR FRIEND HAS AN ULCER. I do know that I have come off of methadone and vomited for two days staight-finially ending up at the emergency room.(VERY DANGEROUS)You can dehydrate and go into shock. Ulcers can perforate(bleed,so that is a concern.

I do think it is very serious and should not be let go.

It is awful to live this way. I hope I can help. This is a great web sight. BOOMER (I take 40mgs of Nexium a day)

While you do not go into great detail on her condition I will venture a guess that she is using pain meds because of pain? I have sever pain from many injuries I also have sever nausea and throw up quite a bit, I take no meds and the pain causes me to hold my breath at times and breath to shallow at other times. Its not life threatening but it makes me wonder if she is on high doses of pain meds she should not be having sever pain?

It is also entirely possible for the meds to be making her sick what are the doctors saying?

Why is she taking the meds? Need more info.

I did neglect to mention the obvious that the oxycontin or vicodin may also be responsible, particularly if the dose is large.

sorry to hear of her difficulty, i am very aware of how it affects our loved ones... i have been on both sides...

it sounds to me, and this is just my humble opinion, that there has to be something that they are not catching... just a gut feeling here... i am not a doctor but i am an LMT and have worked in a medical capacity most of my life...

i also remember how long it took for the doctors to find out what was causing my back pain 11 years ago... and for a while, as everything came out negative, i thought i was making it up in my head to get pain meds... i actually doubted myself...

i hope they keep searching for what is causing her this problem... and what the doc here said about the premarin and neurontin and all is a good start...

i hope you get some support for yourself also!!!

Please help. I can't start a new thread..So here goes..I was taking perc for 7 yrs. Then methdone for 2 yrs. (all for pain)

The doc then put me on oxys for a month then switched me to morphine 15mg. 4xdaily. I had surgury and 2 weeks later went c/t for 8 bad days. On the 9th day I took 1 morphine pill. Have take one aday for the last 2 months. Since I can't break the morphine pill, I was wondering (since I have a bottle of hyrocodone 5mg) how much hydro's should I start tappering with..I want off the meds..I'm moving out of state and need all my energy.. If anyone could help, I would be so thankful..

You can find a conversion chart at this URL:

http://www.globalrph.com/narcoticonv.htm

That should help you in finding the information you need to taper and get off the meds.

You can purchase a pill cutter that works really well at most pharmacies.

I am trying to figuire which is worse tapering or CT.  Looking at the pills calling my name - very loudly - or suffering WDs.  I remember how bad they were last time. There is a brand new RX on my counter, the amount that I need to taper, but I wonder if I have enough will power to stick to it.

I just want to feel normal and that is really hard because I really don't know what normal is anymore.

I wish you luck!

I know how miserable nausea and vomiting are. I suffer from nausea from an unknown source (my guess is anxiety). Phenergan has been a life saver for me. My understanding is that it is much safer than other anti-nausea meds such as Compazine. But the doctor is right -- try eliminating meds that might be the culprits first. And yes, Vicodin can make you deathly nauseous, esp. if taken in large doses. In the meantime, ginger capsules may provide some relief. My sincere wishes for resolution of this problem, as I know from personal experience how awful this problem is.

A complete liver panel might not hurt, either. Best of luck,

Milo

Is Fioricet another NoNO drug?  I have never heard of it, but has been advertised for migraine and cluster headaches.  Something I get.  Since the hydro is out of the question is this something worth looking at.  Also, does any one have any suggestions for Arthritis/CTS
