Am I an alcoholic or not?

by jen76, Jan 22, 2007 12:00AM
What is considered to be an alcoholic?  I enjoy a drink or two at the end of the night, usually every night.  Does that make me an alcoholic?  Alcohol does not interfere or disturb my life in any way.  I don't become drunk or out of control, I just enjoy a vodka/soda (or two) cocktail at the end of the evening on a daily basis.  My grandfather was an alcoholic, does that matter?  I work full time, I function in the daily world, I attend a college class in the evening twice a week, I raise two kids and keep house.  However, at the end of the day, I come home and make a drink or two, every night. I just enjoy it. It relaxes me and makes me feel good.  Is this a sign of alcoholism?

One would assume that since you are able to multitask, that is keep a home tend to kids and go to college, them perhaps you have some ability to gain knowledge or even understand certain things....posses common sense I guess. I would first ask, are you being honest with not just us on the forum, but with yourself...if you can not function without your relaxation at night then obviously it is an addiciton.......my father was a "functioning" addict for nearly 3 decades..........held the same job was the sole bread winner of the family.....etc.....

Didnt mean to get you worked up. My family has addiction problems, especially with alcohol. My brother drinks every night, and it started just like you, and your dad. Just a couple a night. But, When he went to just stop he realized his body needed it, then he became obsessed with drinking.

If you really can control it you are very strong, but most people doing something daily has that very thing come back and bite them. Why even mess around?? It is like playing with fire, one day you will get burned!

Usually people that ask, know they are bound to get bit by the hair of the dog. Especially if they are here.

Let me just say this.... one or two drinks a day?   Alcoholism? Might be a bit of overkill.

See if you can go a night w/o one .... and if you can go for a couple of nights w/o your drink(s) without experiencing any nevermind or anxiety... enjoy your drink at the end of the day.

If you feel anxiety over not having that drink... you might be a risk for a bigger problem down the line.  But the way you explained it now...doesn't sound all that threatening.

I don't drink.... doesn't mean I won't have one if I want one if we are out for dinner...as a rule...I never consider drinking.   But we have wine at the table every night at dinner and my Mother (85) drinks a glass of wine...EVERY NIGHT.  Never binged, doesn't drink other wise.... so it's a matter of perspective I guess.

If you are here asking... there must be a reason ....My two cents... take it for exactly what you paid for it.

THANKS. THERE ARE NIGHTS WHEN I GET HOME TOO LATE TO EVEN BOTHER WITH IT.  I KNOW I CAN GO WITHOUT IT WITHOUT HAVING ANY TROUBLES.  I THINK I'M OKAY.
