Surgery...dilemma!

by ryanthesoberlion, Jan 23, 2007 12:00AM
Hi there

Im in a bit of a pickle (No, not pickled yet!!lol) Im a month and a half sober/clean. I was mixing codiene with  high amounts of zopiclone and alcohol when I was using. This is where the dilemma comes in.

Im going for 2 major surgeries this year. Both take a long time to heal from. Theyre not totally urgent, but my spot on the wait lists have come up and if I wait till the next round, it will be another few years and by then I would face heavy physical consequences. My doc told me that after Im released from the hospital that I'll be needing T-3s as the pain will be severe. He is a physician and works primarily with addictions. I talked to him about my concern and he says that he understands my concern and it's valid, he said, however, that using the meds, as long as they really are necessary, will not damage my sobriety. My sponsor agrees. Im just so terrified of it triggering something for me. My doc has placed a block on my Rx (As I have them covered by pharmacare) so that he is the only one who can write me a prescription in order to get it covered. Also, if I bring an Rx in thats not from him, pharmacare sends a popup to the pharmacy that says they have to call my doc and he has to ok it before they fill it. I really like that he has done that because it gives me a sense of safety untill I am strong enough to handle it. Im worried about being able to moderate them on my own after release though. Any ideas???

You have done all the right things.  Your sponsor knows.

PPL have surgery every day...go on Pain Killers... and come off after the surgery.

As addicts we share the concern, but you seemed to have covered your Butt and your Dr. is aware.  Just don't get into any "fancy footwork"... remember your w/d and just get better from your surgeries.

Your concerns are valid...but you do have a sponsor...and your Dr. is totally aware of what is going on.  Hopefully everything will fall into place and you'll be surprised at your own determination.

Seems like everything is already falling into place for you.
