MARCE4 and Mylegram

Hi Marce4,

Did you get your mylegram yet?  I have one scheduled for this Tuesday at 12:30.  My surgeon won't let me do the MR Neurography.  I just wanted to follow up with you and ask you how difficult/painful(?) the procedure was.  Did you get any results yet?  I am still dealing with these awful shooting pains in my legs.  Still managing on 4 Norco a day, sometimes I need 6. I am hoping my mylegram will provide some answers as to why I have this continuing pain 12 weeks after a laminectomy (without fusion).  I have a dreadful feeling that next time he is going to want to put some hardware in but I AM NOT doing that.  I have read too many stories where even when the hardware was put in the patient didn't have any relief or had an increase.  My surgeon even shared with me that a patient he had performed a laminectomy with fusion a month before me came out of surgery with pain in both legs instead of the just the one leg he originally went in for.  I like my surgeon and he came highly recommended by the surgeons I used to work with but I think he and I will soon have to part ways as I will not let him (or anyone else) perform a fusion on me.  I have never been to a Pain Management specialist but I think I may have to research some here in the Tacoma area.

I hope all is well in the Boston area - looks like you are getting a nice break in the weather.  Still gray and rainy here in Washington State.

I had myleogram, last year, it wasn't awful but not fun at all!  I only had bad pain in my hips afterward for 20 minutes or so.  Like most things, I think, the worry is much worse than the reality.

You'll be fine, and with any luck at all they will find an answer for you pain.

Good Luck

Thanks for sharing your experience Kipp!  Were you directed to lay down for 24 hours following the procedure?  I was told that I will have to do that to avoid leaking spinal fluid from the area where the needle will penetrate.  I understand that the headache one can get as a result of leaked spinal fluid is massive.  I suppose I will have to ask my doc to prescribe me something (at least 5 or so) for handling a headache if I get one  I have had only one migraine in my life.  i was 19 and on active duty in the U.S. Navy and my husband had to carry me into the ER.  It was the most excrutiating pain I have ever had in my life!

Thanks again,

Hey....I didn't think the myelogram was that bad....I felt lots of pressure after they injected the dye but it only lasted for a short while.  My results said that the herniation of L5-S1 was compressing the sciatic nerve (nothing I didn't already know unfortunately!) I to had a partial laminectomy/ discectomy over a year ago....they are recommending another surgery but I am trying less invasive measure (Yoga/PT) and I really want to try acupuncture.....I saw someone here had tried this....I want to get more info.  I hope things work out for you as well. Let me know how it goes next Tues. We can compare notes. Do you have the same problem as I do?

Take care and good luck on Tues!

I also battled the L5/S1 with conservative therapies for a year before I gave in to the laminectomy on Jan25th  of this year. Before the surgery my FP gave me hydrocodone 5/500 and when I was taking too many of those to control the ppain he upped me to 7.5/500.  After the surgery I was given percocet for the first week and have been on Norcos since then.  That was on reason I came to this board because I knew I had been using narcotics for a long time and I wanted to know how to get off them when the time came.  Well, the time still hasn't come and now I get to do the mylegram.  I hope for my sake they find a compressed nerve because I don't think it is just inflammation after all this time has passed since the sx.  I would also like to find a surgeon that does the minimumly invasive procudures that are so popular now,  So far I see them in California and Florida. I am sure if I researched hard enough I could find one in Seattle.  At least that would not be out of network for my insurance.  it really is amazing just how much time (not to mention the physical and emotional pain) this back issue takes up in one's life.

You know, I think I meant to write to Mariyeh (she's in the Boston area, right?) about the mylegram and wrote to you in error -  but pretty cool you had an experience to share with me also!

Thanks again,

dak

What a ding-**** I am.  Can't keep my Marce's and Mariyah's straight!

So- where does one really get THE BEST Philly Cheesesteak?  I heard it is at a place Mamma's.  But I guess there are also two places right across the street from each other that are pretty teriffic also.  I have never had a Philly Cheesesteak which is really sad since I grew up in New Haven, Connecticut.  I really miss east coast food alot.  I friend of mine just sent me a great box of Italian cookies from a bakery in New Haven.  I hid it so my b/f would not gobble them all up.  I also miss REAL east coast pizza and a REAL loaf of Italian bread!  God - I just made myself hungry.  I haven't been for a visit back home in over 7 years.  I think I should drive and eat my way across country.  I probably would put back that 35 lbs I lost since I stopped taking an antidepressant (Lexapro).

Absolutely.....Pat's is the "King of Steaks"!  Geno's is great too!  There was a big controversy with Geno's last year. The owner put out a sign that said if you can't order in English, you can't order at all!  All over the Phila. Inquirer!  I had a Mamma's steak...pretty good too but my favorite of all times is D'Allesandro's in Roxborough or Chubby's across the street!  I get them like once a year....they aren't exactly nutritious and calorie conscious but MAN ARE THEY TASTY!!!!!!:)
