Please, what is this....

by helpless2569, May 05, 2007 12:00AM
My Husband is an alcoholic, my biggest concern is that after he "passes out" he will have the coughing fits that cause very large amounts of mucus to come out of his nose and mouth.  These "fits" can last up to 10 mins, a long time when it appears that he is fighting to not choke.  They will also happen more than once in a "session"

Please can you tell me why this happens and when I should really call an ambulance I am so afraid that I will wait to long.

try one of the Ask a doc forums.. they will get back to you as soon as they can.. I am so sorry no one here tonight has an answer... its very slow here tonight.. you are in a scary situation with your hubby so i can understand wanting to know..  is he doing this while asleep??

by helpless2569, May 05, 2007 12:00AM
Yes while he is sleeping and he doesn't wake up he will sit up sometimes if it gets bad enough but I have to help him clean it off his face.  I swear it reminds me of when my son has an allergic reation to peanut butter...the thick large amount of mucas.  I put in the "recovery" position while he sleeps and I do think that helps,  I don't want to cause a problem by calling an ambulance if he doesn't need one but I am so afraid that I will wait to long...and I of course can't sleep when he like this.  I will see if I can find the other place you are talking about.  Thanks for the reply very nice knowing that someone is out there tonight....gonna be a long one

again so sorry for you.. he only does this when drinking right?? so its not sleep apnea right??   a small alcohol allergy can cause this.. I have a friend who when he drinks he can't breath through his nose and he gets phlegmy.. he may have this and when he lays down it drains and hits his gag reflex.. it a thought.. can he sleep propped up some may help with the drainage??  I would force him to see a doc... tell him you can't sleep until he gets help with this.. its not fair to you.. its hard enough to have a husband who drinks but to then deal with this on top.. you poor thing.. let me know if you need anything..

Thank you your support has made my heart less heavy.  He has gone to the doctor who told him if he doesn't stop it will be too late, he is only 42.  I can't make him get help, I have tried...all the threats and promises they don't make his problem go away I am just hoping he wants help before it is too late but this stuff is the scary part...

oh my.. woman.. you are gonna have to be strong.. lay out as much tough love as you can..  not only for him but to save yourself..  you are right he has to want it.. until then.. pray.. and don't put up with it and enable him. (of course help him if he isn't breathing..) don't enable the drinking.. have you thought of or gone to alanon??  You sound like you could use support from people who are in your shoes.. I know when i was a drug addict teen my gram who raised me went and it helped her sooooo much..  His alcoholism is making you sick as well... You have to take care of you!    worrying yourself and the sleepless nights are gonna kill you.. at least kill your spirit..
I will be around here for a while if you need someone to talk to...

by helpless2569, May 06, 2007 12:00AM
Thank you.  Is this the only way that you talk in here by posting?

yeah.. some of us have Yahoo messanger and talk that way..  if you want i can give you my email address??

by helpless2569, May 06, 2007 12:00AM
Your email address would be great, if you don't mind...I could use a friend.  Being married but feeling like the loneliest person in the world sucks.  I did just pay the $15 to post the question to the doctor side so maybe they will have an answer that will scare him enough to take some action.
