Why cant i drink liqour anymore?

by il circo, Jun 13, 2007 12:00AM
Hi.

I drank heavily for several years.  My main drink of choice was whiskey which i typically had a cocktail when i woke up in the morning, went to work, had drinks at lunch, got off work at 4 and went straight to a bar till closing

I never saw myself as having a problem until i went to the hospital for throwing up blood every time i drank.

fastforward 3 years.

i have not been drinking much over the last few years, mainly wine and beer (which i have roughly a half bottle of wine and may be 2 beers over the course of a few weeks)

anyways my question is...

i have tried to drink liqour a few times over the last few years but it seems everytime i have a (one) cocktail i end up as drunk as if i had 5 and then throwing up.

i was wondering if this was normal? and if there is anything i would be able to do  to be able to have a cocktail again?

This happens to me now too. I can't drink very much without getting drunk and sick and if I drink liquor I get violently ill. I'm not sure but I think it's the way our bodies metabolize the alcohol when we get older. Don't quote me on this. It also might have something to do with how much we drank over the years. That is just my opinion. I'm no doctor or anything.

Take it from me you are blessed that you can't drink it anymore. Think of how you feel after drinking. I don't like the taste of hard booze and it makes me crazy like that movie "Blind Date."  I have a few beers now and then. I worked with a man that was a alcoholic and he was throwing up blood at work. He went to the hospital by ambulance and was doing pretty well. Three days later he passed away. He was the nicest guy you would ever want to meet. It is a horrible way to die and keep it in mind before you reach for the hard stuff.  Good luck to you.

Maybe go see a Doctor just in case.  Just get things checked out.  Tell them you need a check up.  Ask them to do blood work - just to make sure everything is functioning properly.

I think you might be allergic to it. It can happen with anything and I read that your body changes blood every 7 years or something along that line. Who knows maybe that is just an "old wives tale"?

I heard that the skin regenerates every 7 years - then again I could be wrong.  Can't be sure of much unless you are sober at the time! lol

in later stages of alcoholism you cant drink as much as you once did. it concerns me and id have your liver checked. at this point id say its best if you were to try to sober up and maybe try an aa group. your life might depend on it. i have seen a man go through this, he still tried to drink like he used to. he ended up in the emergency room, he was told to quit or die. well he went to aa, he shook, looked horrible, couldnt look eye to eye or hardly speak.  that man now has over a year sobriety and he looks wonderful!! not an easy road, but it can be done. when your ready.

You need help immediately. One of the signs of serious liver dysfunction is drunkenness from a normally low consumption of alcohol. It means that your liver can not filter the alcohol like it could when it was healthy. You need to stop NOW.
