Hydrocodone Addiction - repeating the Cycle Again

I was doing some reading about addiction and come across the site.

I have been an addict for most of my life.  My current drug of choice is Hydrocodone.  I have back problems and get my meds from my pain specialist.  For the last 2 years I have been going through wd once a month.  I usually have to go cold turkey for a least one week.  This is torture and I so want this to stop.  I am not taking the meds for the pain ,even though the pain is real, but for the high I crave.  I am taking around 100mg per day until the bottle starts looking low and then start taking less.  No matter how hard I try I can not regulate myself.  When the bottle is empty I say I am not going to do this again and next time I will take the prescribled 40mg per day.

Is there anyone here that has back problems that must be brought under control with some type of pain meds?  If so what are you taking?

Sorry about the name change but for the life of me I could not remember my password.

I would like to thank everyone for the words of encouragement.  This is day 2 and I feel terrible.  Really weak and aching all over.  Funny thing though, my back does not really hurt that much and that was supposed to be why I was taking this stuff in the first place.

For me the w/d is something that I can get through.  I've done this so many times before, but I am already counting the days until I get a new script and start the cycle again.  Why can't I just be happy with being sober.

I have had 2 back surgeries along with a T12 break and now more bulging and hernieated discs in lower back and cervical (neck) area. I take or TOOK percs 10/325 and was recently dropped by my pain mangement doctor - long story. I am right now c/t and it is awful and I know what you mean about that empty bottle and trying to slow down when you get close to the end nad how you won't / want to do it again and yet it constantly repeats.

I have two small children and desperately want to kick this habit but desperately want the pain to go away - I know my life will never be the same since the accident and the surgeries but there has to be a more manageble way of life to live then feeling like Dr House (lol) although I'm more of a closet taker - even my husband doesn't or didn't know the extent of my use - I look fine so everyone assumes I don't have disabling pain.

I'm here if you ever want to talk / chat albeit I am chasing kids when they are not napping. Like right now - so I am about to sign off. Good luck to you!

Oh yes I have been taking hydrocodone since a surgery in Jan from which I had to endure complications in wound healing. I'm still not healed and it can be painful, however, I'm not still taking the vicodin for that reason, really. I'm taking 50 - 60 mg per day, slowing up when the bottle's low. I usually have to go two or three days without before I can get a refill. I had planned to taper off with my current refill, but am not doing so well with that. I keep telling myself "just two more". I've dealt with this before (having gone through rehab two years ago for both drinking and pills), and had been clean two years. So by convincing myself as long as I don't drink too, and they are prescribed for me with a good reason, I rationalize I'm ok. Maybe the next refill I'll start tapering. I know I can do it if I want to badly enough. Then again I will tell myself 'why stop if I don't have to? I DO still have pain and my doctor does still prescribe them) Maybe I'll just take them until I can't anymore.

Yes i haveback problems, and that is why i got hooked on norco and methadone.  i am now off them and xanax  for 13 days.  ibuprophen is helping my back more than the pain pills did.  i could always feel it through the haze of my addiction, i just didn't care.  now, with the ibuprophen, the pain is controlled.  i usually wait till almost bedtime to take it, so the pain doesn't keep me awake.  hopefully this will help you, too.

I was on hyrdo and oxycontin when I was in the states having a gall bladder removed. The op went very wrong and I needed a lot of pain meds.

When I came back to the UK neither of these drugs are prescribed (due to their massive addiction potential). So I was given a couple of substitutes which didn't really come close to the high I was getting off hyrdo and oxy. Morphine was used a few times a long with some good old valium and temazepam (god bless her).

I just had to go through the turkey which was really awful. Nerves felt shot, seats, jerks, spasms, complete inability to sleep, pain, more sweats, anger, depression........ the works......... but it did go away after about 5 days. 5 long horrible days but it did go away.

My advice, ask your friendly doctor for some valium and sleeping pills and go for it. You really have to psyche yourself up for it but you CAN do it!!

wow.  that is huge.  you should be feeling better soon, but you really took a huge leap.  try hot soaks, b vitamins, mulyi-vitimins with minerals and green tea.  also eat bannanas, for the hot flashes and sweating.  got to keep that potassium up.  drink lots of water for the runs and to help flush it all out.  you have come so far already, you're almost there.  you can make it.  norco's aren't a long acting drug, so most of what you are feeling now is shock to your system from the sudden wd's from so much.  get as much rest as you can so you can recover.

This is a wonderful forum. I'm a professional that got hooked on Hydrocodone (Norco) for over 6 years now. It was prescribed for herniated disc pain in my upper back (an old injury from playing ball in college). Because of this addiction (20-25 10mg. Norcos), I went from an $82,000/year, highly responsible and public job, to being on unemployment now. This addiction, coupled with alcohol, has cost me everything. (I had been to 2 rehabs for alcohol and was clean for 2 years, but the Norcos made me feel like I could drink responsibly. I see a lot of good advice in this forum for WD. I've been out of meds for 4 days now and its so bad that I tried to get my Oxy (instant release-30/day script filled early. The pharmacy refused and checked with a state data base and called my Dr. to tell him that I had done this successfully 3 times. The sweating, the runs, the "icky" feeling and lack of energy is terrible (when I was high on my meds, I worked like crazy but when I'm in withdraw I'm so useless a hide from everybody. (Which also cost me a girlfriend). So thanks everyone for  your suggestions. One thing I learned in 2 years of AA is that our addiction stories, no matter what the drug/alcohol of choice, are usually similar. And I see in this forum that that is so very true. Thanks again everyone.

Welcome to the Forum...

I am sorry to say I have no bak problems..but also wanted to acheive that high. Someone on here can and will help you.

It is such a vicious cycle. My addiction with Oxy Contin started when I had a toothache. When the pain was gone, the want became more present. I started out taking 1 or 2 perks on the weekends, recreationally, then it lead to 5-10/ then 10-20...THen I was introduced to Oxy. In the end, after a three year addiciton, I was up to 1000mg of Oxy's a day. I too, was going through w/d at least two or three times a month due to lack of pills from my dealer..It was a nightmare. I would talk to your Dr about maybe getting weaned or tapered off the Hydro's and getting put on a non-narcotic pain med...If that helps..Good Luck/..
