Wellbutrin/Zyban for nicatine and health insurance

by aboo, Jun 29, 2007 12:00AM
Ok, this is my fifth or six try at quitting smoking, and I'm ready to do it for real this time. My father has been smoke free for five years, and he was able to quit with a combo of the nicotine gum and Zyban.

Since all other methods (gum, patch, cold turkey and even hypnosis) have failed, I would like to try his method. However, I have one problem:

My insurance company is under the belief I am a non-smoker. I shouldn't have lied, but at the time I signed up, I was in the process of quitting, although I failed that attempt. I feel like I can't just walk into my doctor's office and ask for a prescription to aid me in my smoking cessation due to fear that my insurance company will get wind and I will get in huge trouble.

What can I do? How can I ask my doctor for help if I have the prospect of getting in huge trouble with my insurance company looming over my head?

Can you go to another Doc, and pay out of pocket for the script and visit? As long as it's not filed on insurance, they'll never know.
