hello everyone
i'm new here
i was wondering if anyone here struggled with self injury as an addiction?
i am also wondering how it compares to other addictions.
would it be considered some what a physical addiction do to the endorphine need that many SI-ers become dependent on?
just was curious as to hwoyou all view SI in termsof an addiction
thank you all for your time
stay strong <3

I was a cutter when I was very young so I do know the feeling your talking about and yes, I believe there can be a connection with the release of endorphins or whatever.

Do you want to stop and you can't?

I guess I always thought of that as more of a compulsion than an addiction. Not sure why.. just how i perceived it..
In general on this site most of us are pain med addicts... oxy, vicodin, ect..  I am not sure many of us would understand what you are going through.. I want to help if I can... I just don't know how much help I would be never have been in your shoes.. Let me know if I can help...

Hi there - i don't know precisely about a physical addiction component, but i know that when i used to cut as a teenager, it was definitely an emotional/psychological dependency - i did not know other ways to cope with my feelings, so i would find myself feeling overwhelmed, pent up, frustrated and cut as a release. I am sure that the body's response to the pain of a cut would also have habit forming element. I very much hope that you find help for yourself, it is such an intricate, complex problem, and all I know is that I was hurting so much when I was doing that to myslef, hurting on the inside and the only way to show it was to cut on the outside. All the best, those websites look like a great start - i hope you find your peace.

Hi we, I wanted to let u know that my daughter used to cut.  I took her to a psycologist and she diagnosed my daughter with "major depression" on top of "add".  She prescribed her lexapro and ritalin.  She stopped cutting.  I dont know if that will work...but its a start....take care and good luck...
