A question for chronic allergy sufferers

by borninquisitive, Jun 08, 2006 12:00AM
For some time now, I wake to spit out some very thick, green mucus in the morning. Throughout the day, I occasionally spit varying colors...however, this waxes and wanes.

The phlegm isn't always colored. Mornings tend to be the worst. I found that taking Benadryl at night does help some.

The doctor gave me a script for Tetracycline, take 1 week (4 times daily) for a possible sinus infection and the rest (2 times daily) of the antibiotics for acne.

On day 7 now, I still have the occasional discolored phlegm.

I do not have a fever nor cough but do have a swollen gland, with that I will say that 2 months ago I had my tonsils taken out and will note that my voice is still abit off. Too, I have quite a deviated septum.

Anyway, I am wondering if thick a.m discolored phlegm is common for you?

Thanks much.

You didn't indicate what color your discharge was, so it will be difficult to pin down a reasonable plan for you.  Generally speaking everyone has nasal drip.  it is something that occurs everyday of the year, you just don't know it.  When it becomes thick, you can "thin" it by drinking more water, using a humidifier at night, or using a saline nasal spray.  Most nasal problems are caused by a virus, not a bacterial infection, so antibiotics are not generally useful.  When discharge is yellow, brown, or green it can indicate sinusitis.  Sinusitis is usually diagnosed by xray. If antibiotics are given for this, they should be taken for at least 6 months.  The blood vessels to the nasal sinuses are very tiny and the blood cells carrying the antibiotics take a long time to get the drugs where they need to be long enough for them to do their job.  Since you just have your tonsils out, I have suspicions that your current problems may be due to blood dripping down your throat more than anything else.  When you lay down to sleep, the blood accumulates at the back of the throat and stays there until you sit up.  Since is has been sitting back there getting air, it gets thick and you will sometimes need to hack it up to get rid of it.  If this discharge is brown (usually caused by blood), or smells bad, then call your doctor right away.  You may have broken a stitch and need to be seen. You don't want that to get infected.  Hope this helps

Do you have carpet in the bedroom?  If so, try having it removed.  Hypo allergenic mattress cover, keeping the bedroom as dust free as possible.  I have severe allergies and have tried all kinds of medicines.  Just recently started taking Sudol 12 Tan 4-30mg, and I am also trying Astelin nasal spray for the first time and have experienced some relief.  Last year, my doctor prescribed Methylprednisolone tablets 4mg and what a great relief that was.  Last month, my allergies started up again, and I was so bad, I went back to the doctor and she gave me an injection of Celestone Soluspan, also known as betamethasone acetate and betamethasone sodium phosphate.  Within 4-6 hours, I felt like a new person.  Amazing for an entire month.  Unfortunately, my symptoms have started coming back.  I'm willing to get another injection because it was like I never had allergies.  My last and final suggestion may sound crazy but it's the only way I can sleep at night when my allergies are acting up and meds aren't working....I take little wads of tissue (1 square of TP) and stick them in my nostrils...half in, half out.  It helps with drainage.  Sounds weird, looks weird, but helps.   I think it acts as a filter...or try sleeping with a face mask, like one of them surgical mask.  Good luck.  I feel for both of you.
