Levaquin Skin Reaction

by split, Oct 06, 2006 12:00AM
I was prescribed Levaquin recently for a prostate infection. During the course of taking the antibiotic, I developed an acne-like reaction on my entire forhead. it has been two months since the reaction and the condition has not dimininshed. There were a couple of other members- "Bumpy3" and "rashy1" who experienced identical symptoms in a closed thread back in June/July. Has anyone else experienced this and had any luck with treatment?

Thanks

This is a link to a page that tells about different reactions to Levaquin and a few other antibiotics. It also gives some other links dealing with your type of reaction.

I hope this helps you. I found some information that was helpful to my Mom, who also had a bad reaction to Levaquin. She ended up at the ER, where they said that it was her sinuses and gave her some anti-inflammatories which she also had a reaction to, and told her to continue the antibiotic. Luckily, we got in touch with her GP and he told her to stop taking all of the meds. She ended up having to go on an anti-depressant and blood pressure medicine in order to control some of the side effects. She is doing better now, but still is on the anti-depressant and blood pressure meds.

semmaf,

Thanks so much. I'm learning the hard way that you cannot accept a doctor's advice without doing your own homework first.

My name is Kaela. My boyfriend of 3 years has an 8 year old girl with severe excema. I never knew what it was until I saw her poor skin. It would crack and bleed all the time when we used to cover her in eucerin. I used to wait until she'd been sleeping a bit and then lather more on her. Nothing ever changed. Then I was introduced to a company that only produces botanically based products. My boyfriend and his ex-wife were more than willing to try it out so we began with these few products. I am soo thoroughly impressed with her results that I buy stuff for myself and all of my family. Her cracking and bleeding went away completely after a month and you could see results in just a couple of days. She no longer was scratching in her sleep and wearing band-aides to school. If you want more information let me know I think everyone should use this on their children and themselves. They have products that are all botanically based from Baby care- Vitamins-Remidies-Acne- to Anti-aging. If you have any questions e-mail me I found tons of information. ***@**** or ***@****

Same thing happens with me. Whenever I take either Levaquin or Cipro (almost the same thing as Levaquin) for a prostate infection I get pimples in my forehead too -- often right in the middle where they look the worst. I apply over-the-counter acne medications to try to hold back the acne. But it is exactly as you describe. If I take Bactrim, this does not happen.

I was prescribed Levaquin for a sinus infection yesterday.  I took the first dose yesterday evening.  Within 30 minutes, my entire scalp and part of my forehead had broken out into these huge bumps, and my scalp and ears were itching.  My face was also blood red.  I took some benadryl yesterday, but there are still bumps on my head.  Before yesterday, I had never had an allergic reaction to any kind of medication.

When I called the pharmacist to ask about it, he said "people don't usually have reactions to this medication. Just take some benadryl and don't take anymore of the Levaquin."  Well, the things I've read here and on other sites since yesterday tell me that I'm not alone.  I'm just glad it wasn't something much more serious than a skin reaction. Did your acne ever go away?  I just wonder if I have any more surprises to look forward to.

Hello, i have been looking for people with specific reactions to this drug....a dear friend of mine who was elderly was given levaquin by a pharmaceutically heavy handed MD for simply a light case of pneumonia. Her immune system was very healthy and did not accept levaquin in her body. It treated levaquin as an allergin/virus and attacked it, causing an enormous immune system breakdown within her body. There is a name for this condition, which i can post, i need to check the exact term with her husband, The results....degeneration on a cellular level resulting in blistering all over the body. She even had these blisters inside her mouth and throat. There is no cure for this kind of reaction and she suffered terribly for three years prior to her death in August, 2007. If you have developed blisters that do not go away....see someone immediately, please.
