Allergic Reaction treated but still have itching.

by SeanJThorne, Feb 22, 2007 12:00AM
On 2/20/07 I had a CT Scan done.  I had a very mild allergic reaction to the injection (3 hives).  They immediately treated me with Benadryl and within 15 minutes the hives disappeared.  To caution on the safe side they kept me in observation for an extra 30 minutes after. No other outbreaks have occured.

I still continue to itch a little more then usual though, and have been taking benadryl to see if it helps, but it continues to itch.

My question is whether after having even a mild allergic reaction is it normal to still have some itching the following day or two? Is the injection stuff still being eliminated in my body and is that why it still may be causing itching?

A few things are probably going on...the histamine reaction takes time for your body to relax and return to normal. Plus, your system is 'heightened' and 'on alert' for more triggers so, you can be a little more allergic to things you probably showed no signs of a reaction to bfore... I personally would take the benedryl for 3 days and drink plenty of water - then see if that helps. Again, I've heard that once you've had a reaction - you are more likely to have another one that could be more severe if your body hasn't recovered from the first one. If you don't feel better with benedryl in 3 days - I would call your GP and ask if you need to be on steriods for 6 days (ie:prednisone) to sqeulch the reaction...Keep us posted on your progress!

p.s. did they say how long the dye would last in your system - that they shot into your system?

The itching went away, about a day ago, but thanks for the info.

All I did was drink more water and took double dose of vitamin C.

Here is some info that you may find helpful:

"A cleaner society often means more allergies. Levels of asthma have increased in affluent societies, whereas they have not kept up the same pace in less industrialized nations. One hypothesis for this discrepancy is the “hygiene hypothesis.” As people become cleaner by introducing major sanitation practices, the prevalence of allergies and asthma tend to increase. That’s because a cleaner society—which takes advantage of sanitation technologies, disinfectants, antibacterial products, and antibiotics—wipes out the many “good bugs” (like probiotics, for instance) needed to maintain a healthy and robust immune system.

Artificially removing healthy microorganisms from the environment disrupts the relationship between humans and “good bugs” essential for optimal health.

The overuse of antibiotics can lead to allergies. Recent research indicates that a disruption in intestinal flora due to the overuse of antibiotics may lead to changes throughout the entire immune system. Therefore, food sensitivities and allergies may increase."

There is much more info at the link below.  I hope this helps!
