Breastmilk counts as exposure to foods in relation to allergies?

by allergyfoodques, Feb 23, 2007 12:00AM
If you breastfeed and eat say shellfish. Would it then be correct to assume if you child did not react that they do not have a shelfish allergy and therefor you could forgo the recommended waiting till age 3 stiuplation and feed your child shelfish when they start eating solids?

I don't think exposure through breastmilk is the same as your child actually ingesting the food for themself.  I remember when I was breastfeeding and my son started on solid foods the pediatrician told me a whole bunch of things not to feed my son, but did not say I should also avoid such foods.  This sounds like a good question to ask your child's pediatrician at your next visit.
