Sleep disorder/ OCD

by gj77, Mar 31, 2007 12:00AM
Hi, I'm a guy who is a software engineer by profession. About 4 years ago I started getting symptoms of anxiety and loss of sleep. I had regrets about the past and a career choice I made and I kept regretting and thinking I made a wrong decision. This affected my self esteem and I had problems taking up jobs. I couldn't control my thoughts and couldn't concentrate and I was tired when I got up in the mornings.
I saw a psychiatrist who put me on fluoxetine and paroxetine. I had side effects like drowsiness and headaches so I stopped the medication after 2 months. Then I started enjoying work and thought the depression will go away.
But 2 years back I had bad sleeping problems so I saw my psychiatrist again. He put me on Venlafaxine (Effexor) 37.5 mg and increased to 75 mg. But this didn't help and I still woke up tired. I also got dreams in the night which didn't help.
Then I saw another doctor who tried out SSRI's but didn't work. Then I was put onto Amitriptyline (Elavil). This helped my sleep. It was wonderful. then I developed OCD symptoms. Earlier I had mild OCD but now it became pronounced. I began to check my clothes after going to the bathroom and fiddle with my hair when I was working at my PC. Then I started Clomipramine (Anafranil) 50 mg and went upto 100 mg. My sleep was wonderful but OCD was there. then I was switched to zoloft 100 mg with valium. Now the OCD is 50% ok but I'm having sleep problems again and get very tired during the day.
Please advise me on the best medication for sleep disorder. Will Lithium help with the OCD? Sorry for the long mail and hope quick response. thanks a lot.

I have anxiety and sleep disorder too.  What has worked to keep me asleep:  Ativan 2mg at bedtime, Ambien (some weird side effects) and I've tried Remeron (made me sleep awesome - but also made me eat and gain weight).  Those are all the best I've tried.  Lunesta didn't work for me, but it does for some of my friends.  Right now, I wanted to change from Ativan, so I'm trying Clonaz Dipot.  I think it's okay, not sure yet.  As far as OCD, I haven't had that too bad, but I do know that my husband did and he took 100mg Zoloft daily and it really helped him.  Hope this helps, hang in there.

You could try hypnotherapy.  It's very safe, and great for relaxation, which is often required for improving ones sleep.  There is a free web site at www.free-hypno.com that could help.

Hi, Thanks for the response. I was wondering if you are taking any anti-depressants for your anxiety. Is it ok to take drugs like ativan for long periods of time? I realise that when I take drugs like valium and Ativan without an anti depressant it doesn't help. Thats why I asked you whether your on anti depressants.
Does your husband have any problems with his sleep due to Zoloft? Does he take any sleeping tablets too? Has he recovered now?
Well I wish both of you a quick recovery!

Yes he has recovered fine - thanks for asking:)  He did have some sleep issues, but he worked 12hr night shifts and would come home in the morning and try to sleep, so I don't know if it was the shift or the Zoloft that bothered him.  I took Zoloft too, seemed to be good for me.  Now I am taking Cymbalta, also seems to be ok so far.  Take care!

One thing that has worked for me is taking the herbal medication - 5-HTP (100 mg) about one hour prior to bedtime.  I suffer from mild depression and this herbal has helped my sleep immensely.
