Important Panic/Anxiety Question. Please Help!!

by JB72987, Apr 14, 2007 12:00AM
For the past 4 weeks I've had very odd feeling throughout my body. I feel completely safe in my room, but the moment I walk into a building at my college i feel faint and dizzy like im going to faint. its very scary!! I also feel the same way when i go to wal-mart and other stores. I get cold feet and hands. My doctor recently perscribed Lexapro and Lorezapam 2 days ago but it doesnt really seem to be making an effect, but i also havent left my room either. i really need support/help because i want to get my life back on track normally.!Thank you.

Hey. I am not sure about the prescriptions, perhaps they just don't react with your chemistry the way they are intended.. I would talk to your Doctor/Therapist or w/e and tell them they are not helping your symptoms.. although I hear sometimes it takes around a month for those kinds of meds to start taking an effect.

As far as going out.. I get nervous around large crowds and I would talk to a professional to see if you have social anxiety or paranoia issues. Sounds like Social Anxiety to me though.. if you have been sheltered most of your life whether forced or on your own you may just not be comfortable around people.. a self induced syndrome of sorts. Or possibly you have had problems trusting people because they have wronged you either emotionally or morally and it has taken a mental and emotional toll. We can talk more.. I have similar issues though like I said.. I am not diagnosed..

The Lexapro is an SSRI and will take some time before it begins to take effect.  Lorazepam is the same thing as Ativan.  I just read up on its side-effects, and dizziness is actually one of them, but it's pretty rare.  I'm not an authority on this but with a lot of drugs, the side-effects will go away after a little while.

I know it's difficult going through this, but maybe a little patience is in order.  If you haven't seen improvement in the next few days, call your doctor.  He'll probably explain about the Lexapro, and if the Ativan isn't helping he may prescribe something else.

In the meantime, just try reading up on anxiety disorder and tips to help minimize it.  Do try not to confine yourself to your room, though.  When you do go out it'll make it that much more of a shock to your psychology, so to speak.  Believe me...I know this from experience.

It takes time for the meds to kick in...best thing to do is to take a breath and wait it out.  When you  have to go to class and you feel so sick, the last thing you should do is to panic about it.  Tell yourself it is your anxiety and that it is ok...nothing bad will happen to you...feel what you need to feel and just keep going.

It sounds like a little agoraphobia...I get like that when I am not in my safe places.  You cannot give in to it...you need to just be with it...understand???  As you go along you will understand...let us know if there is anything else that we can do to help.
