Talk Therapy

by Shannon Wyatt, Jun 06, 2007 12:00AM
Question to the group -- my doctor thinks "talk therapy" will help me -- or what he calls cognitive behaviour therapy. Does this actually work for anyone? Thanks!

It worked for me, but only in conjunction with medication.  I tried talking for years and years with modest success, until I combined it with an SSRI.  Talk therapy with medication is a good combo, I think.  Each on it's own has a reduced prognosis for complete, lasting relief, IMHO.  Good luck!

Your dr is the one to tell you what is best for you in terms of having medication with your CBT will be beneficial or not.

Not everyone needs medication, everyone is different. I strongly suggest you follow your dr advise & do the CBT by itself if they see it's more appropriate but don't over push form medication, generally it may show some relief in some cases but generally it has plenty of side effects. so it's worth it to try to do without medication first & see results.

cheers,

I agree with MOTAH.  Stay away from the meds until all else fails.  Personally, I don't feel "talk therapy" alone is all that effective.  I don't know how it works with meds.  Just make sure you find a good therapist.  Some therapists don't give a sh*t about your situation.  They can't wait to get you out the door and collect payment.  If you feel that your therapist is this way, dump him/her and get a new one.
