Hi Barbara,

If you have your doctors permission, you can take the Ativan daily, BID or QID for a week or two. However, I personally would not take it longer than two weeks, as the drug is not indicated for the long-term. Tolerance tends to develop over the long-term, as the drug has a short half-life of 6-8 hours. The liklihood of tolerance is proportional to the half-life (the shorter the half-life, the greater the risk of tolerance).

If the symptoms of anxiety persist, you may want to ask your doctor about Klonopin (which is indicated for the long-term management of anxiety). Usual dose is 1/2 mg twice daily, and the Klonopin will prevent or minimize anxiety.

If the frequency of the PAC's increase, the dose of Blocadren (Timolol) may be increased to 5-10 mg BID (with your doctors permission). For Blocadren to be effective over a 24-hr period, it must be dosed twice daily. The average minimum effective dose is 10 mg BID.

Just an FYI - I took Ativan 2mg at night for 1.5 years and it worked pretty good that whole time for sleep.  I decided I wanted off of it though, so I asked for something diff. for sleep.  I changed over, with no major problems/withdrawals or anything.  I am scared to death to be addicted to something and as of yet, not a single thing has caused me to be addicted.  I've been on Ativan, Valium, Xanax, Tranxene, etc.  and nothing has given me problems.  I think if you are that careful and scared of being addicted, then you should have no problem!  You are hell bent that you won't be addicted, so you have made the choice and you'll be fine.  Works for me:)

Hi there,

I am on Cymbalta for burning pain in my feet/anxiety/depression and Valium as needed in the daytime for anxiety.  Also, I'm on Tranxene for sleep.  I wanted to get off Ativan because the same reason you don't like it - I hate meds, scared of addiction and mainly - I didn't want to develop a tolerance so I could use it if I REALLY needed it for anxiety, you know.  So, I went off:)  Valium works for me when anxious through the day, but I try not to use it like you.  I need to take some now cuz I have chest pain, but I might just suffer thru.  You know how that is:)
