Anxiety Over Surgery

by Raine9, Jun 12, 2007 12:00AM
I have to go in for a "minor" "routine" surgery on Friday.  Not to worried about the surgery itself but more worried about the pre-op stuff tomorrow.  My doc will have to check my lungs and heart and run a blood test.  I keep thinking what if they find something wrong with me that I won't even be able to go through with the surgery.  What if the doctor finds something unexpected when he actually performs the surgery.  I know that it is useless to worry over the things that hasn't happened and may not even happyen.  But I can't help it!  I'm a hypochondriac!  I've been keeping it cool so far.  However, I noticed my anxiety level creep up more and more everyday as the day draws near.  I'm just posting this to vent all my emotions.  Maybe it will help.  Thanks for reading!

Try and turn the situation into a positive one.  The tests will likely serve to prove that you have a healthy heart and lungs and other conditions that are detectable by routine blood tests.

If on the "remote chance" they did find something out-of-whack, they will have discovered it which means you can be treated for it!

Sounds like a win-win situation to me!

I'm okay.  It wasn't as bad as I thought.  I told the nurse about my arrythmia and she ran an EKG it came back normal.  At least normal enough for the surgery.  I won't know about the blood tests until maybe tomorrow.  Then Friday is the surgery....  :o(

Thanks for checking on me.

Hope all is well with you.

how are you doing?  i went through the same exact thing.  they are telling me that i have a problem with my heart and are making me go through all sorts of tests and that has caused more anxiety.  i was exactly where you were.  the thing is the doctors never want to really deal with the anxiety.  that seems like such an important factor, to me, anyway.  i wish you well.

I am okay for now.  Just waiting for my blood results and then tomorrow the surgery....

I'm sorry that you are going through such a hard time.  Do you have any anti-anxiety drugs like Xanax and Klonopin.  It may help you.  It helps me relax a bit but it doesn't take the worry away.  I am still a complete nervous wreck when I go to the doctor or especially when I am waiting for test results.  It's nice to come on this forum and get support and reassurance.  I think that's all you can do is to focus on the positive and accept the support from other people.

Good luck to you!  It'll be all over soon and everything will be just fine!  :o)
