Klonopin and Xanax don't seem to work in stressful situations.

by Raine9, Jun 13, 2007 12:00AM
I've tried taking Klonopin(1mg)and Xanax(1mg)once a day  occasionally when my anxiety level gets to a point that I just don't feel like dealing with it.  It does give me a nice calming sensation.

However, when I try taking it for stressful situations (like dr's appointments and waiting for test results) it doesn't seem to do much for me.  I'm just as nervous and anxious.  Aren't these anti-anxiety meds supposed to take care of these problems?  Did my doctor give my sugar pills???  Is the dose I'm taking too low for these stressful situations? Any thoughts?

I know what you mean.  I haven't taken xanax but I know sometimes the Klonopin could just as well be a Pez candy!!!  I am sure that it is the real stuff.  I just think that maybe you need a higher dose on those days...However, you don't want to rely on meds only.  I know we all hate that we have to take meds, but we also see how reliant we can become on them.  Have you tried deep breathing, or exercise, or green tea, or some natural form of relaxation?  I know how tough those days can be, but you need to try to get through it on your own first.  Exhaust all other possiblilites before you up the meds.  You will feel so much better if you can handle it without the use of more drugs...I KNOW that it is hard.  But you can do it!!

Thank you for your encouraging words.  I don't want to sound like a baby.  I know there are people in this world who are suffering much, much more than I am.  I've tried distracting myself and to not worry so much but I still worry like crazy.  It's like I can't turn it off!  Anyway, I will talk to my doc about taking a higher dose.  I don't take these meds everyday so a higher dose every now and then, I think, would be okay.

Thank again!

Take it a few days before the appt.
It doesn't really help as much as needed.
If its heart rate that bothers you, you could ask your doctor about a beta blocker for stressful situations.
