Loss of a Pet; Anxiety

by Shannon Wyatt, Jun 15, 2007 12:00AM
Hello group -- I have just lost a really close pet and I'm going through the grieving process.  Because of this, my anxiety is flaring up big time.  I'm assuming this is ok -- and that my anxiety will die down with time.  I'm just worried that it will not.  What do you guys think?  Thanks!

Losing a pet is very tough and it is not suprising that your anxiety is flaring up as a result - are you also feeling depressed?  Things will definetly get better but these things sometimes take time.  Try involving yourself in fun activities and going for walks to try and take your mind off your lose - that will help you "heal" faster.

Is getting another pet in the future, something you would consider?  I have found this has helped me get over the lose in the past but you have to remember that you are never replacing the lost pet, but simply giving the opportunities that you what you did to your past pet, to another animal in need.

Thanks for your comment.  Yes, I do feel depressed -- but I've noticed that depression and anxiety go hand-in-hand at times.  It has only been 2 days since my pet's passing -- at times I feel the grief is overwhelming -- and other times I'm fine.  I suppose it will work itself out with time.  As for another pet, I still have another pet in the house.  Thanks!

the last time i lost a pet(a beautiful german shepard)i found the best way to cope was to remember the good times i had with her. that way i felt lucky to have had that great relationship you only get between man and dog. another thing i liked to think was that it was also completely impossible for her to ever be in pain or distress again and that she was genuinely resting in total peace. I tried to be happy for her. hope that makes sense and helps.

I am so sorry.  Our pets are our family members.  You need time to grieve and to go through the steps..it takes lots of time and you need to feel what you need to feel..of course you are going to feel depressed and anxiety over this loss.  Give yourself a break and not worry about these feelings lasting forever, you will get through it...one day at a time.  Wishing you comfort and peace.
