Anxiety and Sleep Problems

by Topher7, Jun 16, 2007 12:00AM
About a week or two ago I started worrying about getting to sleep because I was told by my wife I was snoring some. I became hyper-sensitive to it so I'd try to keep my mouth closed, where was my tongue, etc, etc. So now that I have had an eye appt that looked good and an MRI where they let me go and all, I should feel better. Well last night my nerves got to me and my calves were twitching and I kept getting Myoclonic jerks or hypnic jerks where I pop right out of sleep. I may jerk or my head feels like it pops and I wake up. Anyone have this and are there any relaxation techniques? My mind just wanders before bed.

I've had that popping feeling a couple of times and i just jump up. But it isn't that often, i usually listen to some music before bed, helps me atleast!

Are you on anything? Try taking a Benzo before sleep- ex. klonopin, ativan, Xanax. They are CNS depressants so they help with sleep.
As far as relaxation techniques, try watching a comforting tv show, cartoon (even) before bed. Cartoons always put me to sleep. I also sleep with the tv on- but the volume is low.
The wholistic approach- I've heard that accupuncture works but I haven't tried it. There are some teas/herbs out there that can relax you.
Cutting down on caffeine could also help.

I got a relaxation tape that I listen to with headphones each night.  I've gotten to the point where I enjoy the sensations I get as it relaxes me.  I really like it.  Maybe it would help you to relax and drift off t sleep too.  Good luck!

What is the name of your relaxation tape?

Hi peeps,  I got the relaxation tape from Crowne Plaza during a stay there.  It is done by a sleep expert who takes you thru tensing and relaxing of your muscles and breathing exercises.  If you have a Crowne Plaza near you maybe you can call them to see if you can get one.  Or, go on Amazon and do a search for "relaxation" and up pops a bunch of relaxation tapes.  They are all rated by customers and you can read their reviews of them to find the one that's right for you.  Good luck!
