I would try it for two weeks. If it greatly improves your symptoms, I would suggest that you remain on it. If it doesn't greaty improve your symptoms, then there would be no indication to remain on it long-term.

If that's your main concern, you may as well not take anything.
Every drug has a tradeoff, and Klonopin's tradeoff is dependency. If you feel that the benefits outweigh the risk of dependency, then you should take it.
But the answer is one month, if used everyday, twice a day (at any dosage). After four months of continuous use, you will form a physical and psychological dependency to it.
I would try it for two weeks. If it greatly improves your symptoms, I would suggest that you remain on it. If it doesn't greaty improve your symptoms, then there would be no indication to remain on it long-term.
If it does work for you, and for some reason you need to (or choose to) discontinue the drug in the future, it may be tapered by 0.125 milligrams every four weeks until fully discontinued. 0.125 mg is 1/4 of a 0.5 mg tablet.

Feel better!! NOW I KNOW YOU WILL!!
Initially, Klonopin has a sedative like quality (which is why the dose is started at 0.25 mg, bid). This effect will begin to wear off after two weeks (once the drug reaches steady-state).
After three days, increase your dose from 0.25 mg, bid to 0.5 mg, bid (the entire tablet, twice a day), as prescribed.
Maximum efficacy is seen within two weeks, so you can expect to see the full benefits (relief of anxiety) in about two weeks. The drug reaches 1/2 of steady-state in three days, and you will begin to see some benefit soon.
Klonopin is NOT the type of drug that you want to start and stop, because the effects are only maintained when the drug reaches steady-state. Unlike the Ativan, you should take Klonopin everyday, twice a day (or it won't work very well).
The sedative effect will wear off. You should also try to maintain a normal diet. The Klonopin will help you if you give it a chance to.
