Hip pain

I am a 62 year old male in good health. Over the last 3-4 weeks, I have developed intermittent hip pain primarily in the right hip. Sometimes it's very painful to walk. Other times, it's not a problem and when I exercise on the treadmill it doesn't bother me at all.
My internist sent me for x-rays. He called today to say that the x-rays showed some cysts on my hip and focal lucency. He advised me to see a hip specialist. The soonest appointment I could get is in a month. I'm a worrier so now I am wondering what this finding means. My internist said that he was not concerned about cancer or infection (two references I found in online research). What is this condition, what additional tests might I need, how is it treated? Right now, I take Advil for the pain but would anything else be better? I have found very little patient friendly information about this online and would really appreciate a better understanding of what's going on. Thanks.

I agree with the referral to a hip specialist. You are correct in that cancer and infection should be considered. Arthritis can also be considered.
The next steps would be an MRI of the joint or a bone scan, which can exclude more serious conditions. If those tests are negative, you can consider physical therapy. If arthritis is the issue, surgery can be considered with the hip specialist.
If the diagnosis continues to be in question, a biopsy of the bony lesions can be considered - but the imaging tests mentioned above should be done first.
These options can be discussed with your personal physician.
Followup with your personal physician is essential.

I am a 43 year male with unbearable left hip pain. Shooting/burning/tearing/spasms. I have suffered for 3 years with a progression in the last 90 days. I take everything for pain and muscle relaxers. I have had so much guessing by doctors that I am at my end. I cant sleep and I sometimes for no reason just launch from my bed with pain. I have had an MRI but no info yet. Any ideas?
