Lumpectomy necessary?

I am a 39 year old active, healthy woman.  I recently had both a mammogram and ultrasound because there is one palpable lump on my left breast.  The lump could not be seem on these screenings.  I was told by the technicians that there was no cause for concern.  I went for my annual gynocologist exam last week and my doctor recommended that I see a breast specialist.  I have and she is recommending removal of the lump.  My first question is - why is removal necessary?  And why what are the chances that the lump is cancer?  My breast hurts in that area, the lump moves and is the shape of a good and plenty.

There a company called Novian Health that is right now rolling out lasers for dissolving benign lumps.  They did their clinicals trials and it's been approved. There's no incision and very little in the way of pain or side-effects.  It's a very noninvasive procedure.  Hopefully, the use of lasers will become standard for small cancers as well.  That's what I'm hoping.  But if you have something benign and don't want surgery (don't blame you!), look into this.

As far as I am concerned, the only place for a lump is in a jar.

I call it 13C proper name is indole-3-carbinol. I take it in combination for along with cruciferous vegetable extract, and resveratrol and cats claw ( see Life Extension ). Is like tamoxifin or arimidex without the side effects. Nature has some outstanding things to offer: whole foods are your freind. Good water, no sugar, no white flour. If it flys eat it. If it has a cloven hoof eat it. Fish is your freind, shellfish and bottom feeders are to be avoided. I like stuff easy and have found that 3 simple powders : barley, carrots, and beets, alalize the body, Cancer will not live in this environment, and your own immunine system will become repaired and will kill a new cancer should it occur. You must elimiate wastes daily and completely so I also use a herbal fiberblend ( Barleylife.com : free membership but need a sponser, I can be one for you if you like ). I had DCIS L breast 2 sites: partial mastectomy and 3 months of radiation. Have read some more excellent studies on post radiation effects near the heart and sudden coronary blockage occurs 10 years earlier than would be expected for the population when all factors accounted for. Had some  neat tendon contractions , still have pain, and love the continued shrinkage of the breast each passing year as a result of the " breast consvervation" regime. Sorry to say that I am not overly impressed with the medical model and am associated with it daily. If you have asked, Why me? you didn't get an answer and you certainly where not given a plan to change whatever it is that got you to grow cancer in the first place. So, dust yourself off, suck it up, get pissed, and live. Change the chemistry you have, it is easy and you will loose that fear that would show up at night and would remind you in the morning that it is a different day. Glad to have been through it, I keep it private and don't wave a ribbon or march, I do give to research and read it. I sleep well, eat well, and now am not angry.

Marcy, I am just wondering if you have anything else done thus far. I am very curious in how and what is done to others so I can use this information as a reference and help educate myself.
Beenradiated. I am still curious about C13 and if you could please find it in your heart to let me know why you had radiation. Thanks ladies.  I hope and pray all goes well in the future.

I could not find anything on C13. I have been taking CoQ 10, vitamine E,a Vitamine B complex, Vit. C and Fish oil, for about 6 months now in hopes of imrpoving my over all health and current heart condition, as my general diet is not good or rich of fruits and vegetables. All of the above have antioxidant properties and regenerative cell tissue advantages and other advantages and have helped my heart meds and cholesterol meds work better. Again, could you lead me to where to find this C 13 and vegetable powder information? Also, could you give me the details of your radiation treatment? When did you have it done, what type,  how long, why it was done etc? I would greatly appreciate it.

This is MiracleB: I will heed your Whoooaa! It is much appreciated and I have thought of whether radiation is actually needed or not. Obviosly I need more information and appreciate all of your insight and comments from you and  everyone else, but in the same breath I do not want to be stupid by not doing all I can to prevent a re-occurrance.  Now, keep in mind that this is my first and hopefully only bout with cancer, but It was my understanding, according to my docotr's explanation, that if I elected to have a lumpectomy and not a masectomy, that radiation was and should be considered standard treatment for lacalization of the area and the help prevent any re-occurrance. Perhaps I have been misinformed and do not completely understand the rationale. I am not sure. The fact that my lump was small, the docotr was optomistic about being able to save my breast. I though this was a really good thing, but he said I would need radiation in conjunction with the lumpectomy and sentile node biopsy. The fact that the pathology fro the lump which was removed came back as no cancerous at all, I thought was great news1, but of course it did raise some suspicions with my doctors as to whether or not they got it all. I did hace a needle localization placed prior to surgery because the lump was so small and the wanted to ensure that it was located and removed accurately. It has been speculated, by my docotrss, that it is highly possible that the cancer cells could have been completely removed during the biopsy. I have not had any radiation treaments yet as I am still healing from surgery  and the docotrs want to do an MRI to see if they can determine whether or not all the cancerous cells have been removed and to make sure that nothing else is going on in either breast, so further treatment, of any kind is pending the MRI. I am curios and would appreciated some clarification from any and all who read this. #1. What were the reasons for your radiation? If , say the lump was removed and all margins were clear or clean or what ever they call it, would it or would it not still warrant radiation treatment to help from any re-occurrance?  I am also very curious as to what 13 C is and how to use the vegetable powder etc. I will research on the net but would also appreciate your own information as well.  Taking hed and giving thanks.?

Whoooaa , you want radiation and you don't have any pathology on your lumpectomy specimen? You should just protect you body and suppliment with 13 C and I would recommend some vegatable powders to alkalize the system, build your immunity and ensure you are not a proper host to cancer.

I had a very small lump, 0.8 centimeters, smaller than a pea, in my left breast, which was detected during a routine mammogram in April of this year. Then had another mammogram and ultra sound to confirm. Although it was very small and I had no family history of breast cancer, it was still recommended that a biopsy be done to determine actual pathology. This is they only way to determine if it is cancerous or not. Biopsy should definitely be done prior to lumpectomy.  Pathology from biopsy came back positive for infiltrating ductile carcinoma. I was then told, by my Gynocologist, that surgery should be done as soon as possible to remove it. I had a lumpectomy and 2 lymphnodes removed on May 15th. I am still sore and bruised but healing well. Good news is that the small lump, which was removed, with surrounding tissue, total lumpectomy was about golf ball size, came back from the pathologist as "SHOWING NO CANCER AT ALL!"  and the lymphnoodes were also negative. How is this possible? Of course the docotors were concerned and tried to explained. My surgeon has performed this procedure 100's of times, but he questioned as to whether he got it all or not. He did say it was possible that since it was so small it could have been completely removed during  the biopsies. I believe it was a MIRACLE! At any rate, Adrressing the issue early on is best, but at least have a biopsy first and go from there. I am to have an MRI done next week to make sure nothing else is going on and then will do 7weeks of radiation therapy to prevent any re-occurrance. It was that or a complete masectomy. Keep your hopes and prays up. I know it is scary.

USUALLY THEY WOULD FIRST DO A CORE BIOPSY OF THE LUMP IF LARGE ENOUGH. SOUNDS LIKE ITS TO SMALL TO CORE BUT THERE CONCERN FOR IT BEING CANCER OUT WAYS IT NOT. A LUMPECTOMY WILL DO TWO THINGS , ONE IT WILL REMOVE THE ENTIRE GROWTH AND IF IT IS CANCER THATS THE BEST THING TO DO , SECOND ONCE REMOVED THEY CAN TEST THE GROWTH TO SEE IF IT IS REALLY CANCEROUS OR NON CANCEROUS EITHER WAY GETTING IT THIS EARLY CAN BE THE DIFFERENCE TO ANY OVERALL RISK OR TREATMENT IF NEEDED. I WENT THROUGH THIS WITH MY  WIFE 6 YEARS AGO AND HAVE DONE ALOT OF RESEARCH ON THIS SUBJECT. BELIEVE ME ITS WORTH FINDING OUT
