Symptoms of Paget's Disease of Breast; should I be concerned?

I've seen references to Paget's Disease, where there are multiple symptoms manifested in the nipple area. I have a very itchy right nipple. There is a small bump, on the tip, which I have had for many years. There does not appear to be any eczema, nor is there visible irritation other than it is just very slightly redder than the left nipple. I saw a nurse practitioner who suggested I had a yeast infection and gave me a cream to apply twice daily. That was over a week ago, and the problem has not subsided, so I obviously need to be seen again. I'm thinking I should insist on seeing the doctor and discuss testing for Paget's Disease, but perhaps I am overreacting since I don't appear to have enough of the symptoms. I am 54 years old, and breast cancer runs in my family. Should I be concerned about Paget's?

Dear TAMM: Paget's disease is usually associated with itchiness and scaliness of the nipple. If the itching has persisted, the recommendation is to have a mammogram (if you have not) to be sure there is nothing in the breast and have the skin on the nipple biopsied.

Insist on a thorough check up. My mother showed the same symptoms for two years, and was treated with creams and antibiotics. Guess what, finally a biopsy from which was diagnosed pagents disease. Breast and underarm tissue removed.

Seven years down the line and she is doing fine, but don't be put off, insist on a thorough check now. We have more knowledge at our finger tips, we are aware. Don't be put off. Good luck.

Some months ago my left breast started to itch. My doctor gave me hydrocortisone cream and moisturiser to use. I also went for a mammogram which came back normal. The patch went a brown colour which is touching the aerola. It is dry and when I use the moisturiser goes quite smooth. My doctor is now sending me for a biopsy, I am waiting for the appointment. I always drank fresh orange juice everyday, I have stopped this and noticed my breast does not itch anymore. It has no scabs and does not weep. It is not a rash but a dry brown patch. Could this still be Paget's disease, even though the abstinence from the orange juice has made it much better? I would appreciate any replies. Thanks, Lynn
