Breast Hematoma ?

by SuzieV, May 27, 2003 12:00AM
I woke up yesterday morning with my right breast completely bruised -- black & blue to include my areola.  It looks like someone used it as a punching bag.  There was no trauma to my breast. However, despite the way it looks, it's not sore or very tender.  Coincidently, I have a bad cough.  My husband thinks that it's probably a small vein that burst from coughing.  Is this possible?  Should I be worried?

Dear SuzieV:  It sounds like a blood vessel has burst.  It is difficult to determine whether a cough could have caused it, although it is probably possible.  If you are up-to-date with your mammograms and breast examinations and the breast is not hot to touch or swollen, you probably just have a bruise.  As a precaution, you may want to call your doctor and have it checked out.
