Is it normal for a breast to be sore after radiation therapy?

Hi!

I was wondering if it is normal for a breast to be sore after radiation.  I had radiation almost a year ago and my breast is still sore, only to touch though.   Especially when I do my self exams and also when I get clinical exams done.

Thank you for this forum,  it's great!!

Dear gymnut:  During radiation, it is not uncommon for the breast to be sore, although it is usually more superficial, from skin irritation.  It is possible that you have some scar tissue that is causing the soreness - from either the surgery or the radiation or both.  You should let your physician know next time you see him/her.

Mine were sore during the first year too.  I think some of the problems were due to adhesions or something.  I started massaging my breast each night (which was painful at first) and it seemed to help.  I felt the massaging broke down some of the adhesions... don't know if that was possible, but it worked for me.  It's been 2 years now and my breast feels totally normal except for some residual rib soreness.  That may never go away.
