Recent Mammography § Sonogram

by lindsey03, Oct 27, 2003 12:00AM
I recently had a sonogram on a painful left breast. The pain is from the side of the left breast to the underarm and up above my breast towards my collarbone. The results of my sonogram show that there is fibroglandular tissue and cysts underneath my arm and a mass at the six o'clock position measuring 2.8 cm. They do state that there was no sign of this mass mammographically and that it could be a lobule of breast tissue or lipoma. They recommend a follow up sonogram in six months to check it again. They do not however address the pain above the breast. What should I do?

Dear lindsey03,  Who gave you the final recommendation of follow-up? the radiologist? or your doctor, who should put all the information (test results, history and physical exam information) together? If it was the radiologist's recommendation alone, you should discuss with your doctor about their recommendations based on all of the information.  If it was your doctor, ask some questions about the relationship between the tests results and your symptoms.  If they are unable to help you - you may want to consider a second opinion from a doctor who specializes in breast problems.

The recommendation for the follow up sonogram was from the radiologist. The doctor seems fine to wait for the follow up sonogram. I have not idea whether the cysts can cause the pain to radiate to those areas.

cystic condition of the breast can certainly cause pain, and it may not be equal in both breasts. Things that may help breast pain due to cystic condition are eliminating caffeine, and taking vitamin E (around 800 mg/day). What to do about a shadow that shows on ultrasound and not on mammogram depends on the specific characteristics, and your level of concern. If a lipoma is on the list of possibilities, I infer its sonographic characteristics are not very worrisome: the "echo" from a lipoma is usually very different from that of a cancer.
