Asymmetrical density on baseline mammogram- rec. biopsy

ccl
I have a question for a physician.  I am very nervous cause I have to wait a week to see the breast surgeon, so I feel I need to post a question here.

I had my first mammo 2wks ago. I am 37y/o, with a 1y/o toddler.  I got a letter a week later asking me back for more views.  I called gyno and she said the report was no big deal, just an imaging issue.  I went back and they did some more shots  specifically of the outside area of my left breast(I have large breasts).  The radiologist looked at them and said I needed ultrasound, which I was able to have right then.  The tech spent several minutes scanning over the left outer area. Rad. came in and watched a bit. Then finally he told me what was going on.  He said I had "asymmetrical density" in the left side of my left breast that was still present in the new mammos. He could NOT locate anything with ultrasound, which he said was good. But since he didn't have any previous films of my breast, he recommends a biopsy. The only other thing he said was it was not "terribly worrisome".  I am terribly worried.  I cannot feel any masses, and gyno did not one month ago either.  Does this really warrant biopsy or watch/wait?  Does this sound terrible?
Any Dr. input would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you both for your input.

I see a surgeon who does breast surgery on friday.  His receptionist told me to bring all films and reports and that HE, not the radiologist, would decide if I needed a biopsy.  I was kinda confused by that cause the rad told me I needed a biopsy.

All I can tell you is that I went through something similar recently.  I truly believe that most of what they find is benign but with the new technology available to them they are seeing things that weren't possible before.  They have to be certain and if it means that we are driven crazy with worry in the meantime it's just a by product of today's advanced screening techniques.  Mine was benign and I had convinced myself that it was malignant.  Try not to worry.  Keep yourself busy.  Clean, clean, clean.  It'll help with the nerves.

Dear ccl:  It is not uncommon for a density to appear on a mammogram.  Since this was your first mammogram, it may be difficult to tell, based on this one film, if this density is normal for you or if it is something that needs further evaluation.  An appointment with a breast specialist will help to determine what further testing may be necessary.  Even if a biopsy turns out to be the only way to know what this is...a majority of these turn out to be benign - non cancerous.
