mammograms ok without CAD machines?

by lucy5, Dec 10, 2005 12:00AM
I am a 53 year old healthy, active, post menopausal woman who has yearly mammograms. They have all been normal.I am not on hormones. My concern is that where I go for my mammograms, they do not have the Computer Assisted Diagnostic (CAD) machine to help the radiologists read the mammograms. Should I be concerned, does this mean my mammograms are not read accurately? Our radiologists are good, our hospital will not buy the CAD machines for them. Should I go for mammograms that do have this machine? Should I be concerned that my previous mammograms are ineffective? What is the advantage of having the CAD machine?

Thank you so much for helping.

Dear Lucy:  Computer assisted diagnostic machines for mammograms are designed more as a set of checks and balances than a replacement for a radiologist.  That your facility does not have one does not mean your mammograms are ineffective.  A CAD machine will offer an extra reading - not necessarily one that is better.
