Phyllodes tumor and stages of malignancy

by etolleson, Jan 28, 2006 12:00AM
I was diagnosed with a phyllodes tumor and the pathologist recommeded a lumpectomy (wide excisional biopsy) for a tumor that is 4.5 cm.  I know that after reading the pathology report the pathologist also suggest that the tumor had hypercellularity in the stromal growth but could be benign but was really unsure and recommed another test on the tumor after removal.  How high is the rate that a tumor of this nature turns malignant?

Dear etolleson: Phyllodes tumors can be benign or malignant.  The incidence of malignancy is thought to be between 16-30%, although the actual incidence is unknown.  In either case, the recommendation is to remove the entire tumor.
