I am Luli, I am writting from Peru, South America... I have found some small balls on both of my breasts over 2 years ago, I went to the doctor and he told me it´s possible to disolve them by takeing vitamin e 1000 iu. every 15 days for 3 months, I have already finished that treatment, and I still have this small balls on my breasts, sometimes, especially when my perihod is about to come, it hurts a little bit, so I don´t know what to do... Do I need a surgery? I also want to know if it´s possible to have brest cancer at the age of 25...

Thank you...

Dear Luli:  It sounds as though you have been told you have a condition called fibrocystic breast disease.  It is very common in women and usually gets worse during menstruation.  Caffeine, a chemical found in dark cola’s, coffee, tea, and chocolate, will make fibrocystic breast disease worse.  Avoiding or minimizing consumption of these products may help.  Surgery is not indicated for fibrocystic breast disease.  While it is possible for a 25 year old to develop breast cancer, it is unlikely, particularly in the absence of a family history.  You may have to practice your breast self exam at the exact same time of the month, so that you can become familiar with the lumpiness in your breasts and be able to notice a change.  The best time to examine your breasts is after your period ends.  Because lumpy breasts are more difficult to feel, you should continue to see your doctor once a year for a professional examination.
