Elevated CA-125

by Chicoca, May 25, 2006 12:00AM
Hi,

My mother is 82 years old she had breast cancer 5 years ago  (a small tumor that was successfully extirpated)  and ovarian cancer 2 years ago and both of her ovaries were extirpated and had chemotherapy after that.

Her last CA-125 test was 3 days ago and her level is 156.6 and one month ago, past april, the CA-125 level was 85. The doctor did not give us much information only said that she may need some additional test.

I was searching on internet and found your great website and would like to know if it is possible that she is having a metastasis and if some chemotherapy will have some positive effect this time.

Thank you so much!!!

Dear chicopa:  The CA-125 is a test used to follow ovarian cancer. In a person with known ovarian cancer, a rising CA-125 indicates cause for concern.  As this is a breast cancer forum, our expertise lies with breast cancer.  You will likely be best served by contacting your mother's gynecologic oncologist.  These are the specialists with the expertise in ovarian cancer.
