| . | I recently had a mammogram and an ultrasound which concluded I had severe foci in the right breast with high suspicious of malignancy. There was also Extensive Microcalifications with high suspicious rate of malignancy. It was classified Birad Category 5. Can you please explain my odds of this being cancer and what kind to expect. I am going for a sterotactic biopsy Thursday. Are my odds high that is going to come back malignant? |

| amway | Dear amway: A BIRAD category 5 means that the abnormality is highly suggestive of malignancy. Classic signs of cancer are seen on the mammogram. All category 5 abnormalities typically receive biopsy. Depending on how individual radiologists differentiate between category 4 and 5, the percentage of category 5 abnormalities that will be cancer may vary between 75% and 99%.

| . | What kind of cancer usually comes from a category 5? Do you think Chemotherapy is needed if it comes back malignant? |

They won't answer again, but I can give you my experience. I also had a Birad 5 rating with microcalcifications, and I didn't have to have chemo only a lumpectomy and radiation treatment.
The use of chemo depends, I think, on if the cancer is invasive or not. Mine wasn't it was all contained in the ducts and my surgeon was able to get clear margins with the lumpectomy.
I know that the waiting and the not knowing are the hardest part of all this, but try not to worry, like that is real easy to do :), until you get your biopsy results back.
Good luck.

Breast calcifications are sometimes an early indicator of cancer. So, if it is cancer, it's very possible that it's being found in an early stage. I wish you well. This forum offers a lot of support if you want to keep us posted with your results. |

| . | My biopsy came back that I do indeed have breast cancer. I had surgery on April 4 and they removed the cancer after 4 hours of surgery and I start my radiation 7 weeks from 4/18. I will take tomixifon for the next five years and hope and pray the cancer doesn't come back. Thanks for all the comments!!! |

I'm so sorry to hear of your diagnosis. I'm glad you have the surgery out of the way and will pray radiation and tamoxifen will take care of things from here out. Thanks for letting us know. |
